Student Lawyer Seeks Student Editor for 2000-01

It has been my pleasure to serve as the Law Student Division’s Student Lawyer student editor for more than nine months now, but I am particularly proud of this issue. In line with the Division’s aim to emphasize the "student" in Student Lawyer, this month’s Division Dialogue is a major step in that direction, with no fewer than five stories by student authors from various parts of the country.

To continue that success, the Division needs an energetic and enthusiastic individual to volunteer to serve as student editor for the 2000-01 editorial term. Applications for the position will be accepted until Feb. 1.

The student editor is responsible primarily for producing material for Student Lawyer’s Division Dialogue section: reporting and writing news stories, and soliciting and editing stories from student writers. The student editor also serves on the magazine’s student editorial board, reviewing copy for the entire magazine and helping to develop new story ideas. In addition, the student editor is a nonvoting member of the Division’s Board of Governors and of the Board’s Operations and Publications Committee.

The key to the student editor’s success is the contacts he or she develops among officers, Division delegates, liaisons, circuit governors, and other student leaders. The student editor’s work will begin in April at the Board’s spring meeting in Seattle. In July, the student editor will attend the ABA’s annual meeting in New York, both to meet student leaders and cover developments at the Law Student Division Assembly.

The student editor will also travel to the Division’s November meeting to report on Division business and officer elections. The student editor also may have the opportunity to travel to circuit meetings during the school year. Travel expenses are generally reimbursed by the Law Student Division.

Each month, beginning in May, the student editor must work with Division officers and governors to develop and write the Spotlight column for Division Dialogue. In addition, the student editor must seek to maximize the Division’s positive public affairs exposure by assisting circuit lieutenant governors for communications in getting their message out to the community and the press.

Because the student editor will be responsible for all aspects of Division news coverage, strong writing and reporting skills are necessary. Previous journalism or public affairs experience is required.

To apply, send a cover letter, résumé, three published writing clips (or news releases), and a photocopy of your Law Student Division membership card to Ira Pilchen, editor, Student Lawyer, 750 N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60611. Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 1, 2000. Finalists will be selected and interviewed by telephone, and the student editor will be chosen by early March. The position runs through March 31, 2001. •
