SPECIAL REPORT: DIVERSITY

Women in Law
BY DI MARI RICKER
Although women comprise more than 40 percent of law students nationwide, recent studies suggest that their experience in both law school and practice differs measurably from that of men. Not only do female law students speak up less within the classroom, but average salary levels show they also earn one-third less than their male colleagues. This has led many people to observe that gender bias is alive and well in the legal field

Minorities in the Profession
BY ANNEMARIE MICKLO
Racial, ethnic and gender diversity have made definite inroads into the traditional image of lawyers. New information, however, confirms that wide differences in the perception and experience of minority gains exists. Innovative strategies in mentoring and recruitment are being implemented as the profession works to bridge this gulf

The Minority Experience in Law School
BY ANNEMARIE MICKLO
Law school enrollments are definitely diversifying from their formerly traditional white-male-student majority. Recent legislation regarding affirmative action suits (primarily in California and Texas) has focused renewed attention on racial and cultural diversity on law school campuses, and many minority student associations and activities are actively working to support this goal
