Law Students Bake Cookies to Tackle Hunger
Law students at Barry University School of Law in Orlando, Florida, used the ABA Law Student Division Work-A-Day theme, "Law Students Fighting Homelessness: Project H.E.L.P. (Homeless Experience Legal Protection" to join the fight against hunger. Volunteers baked over 300 cookies then sold them for donations. Tax Season is Around the Corner - Make Your VITA Plans Now
The ABA Law Student Division, in cooperation with the ABA Tax Section, supports the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to assist low income taxpayers and provide tax counseling for the elderly. The ABA Law Student Division's VITA program is an independent operation from the IRS. Prior to and during the 2007 tax season, the IRS provides forms, technical assistance, and training for law students, alumni, professors and other volunteers at all levels of tax preparation experience, including those volunteers with no experience. Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession

The ABA Spirit of Excellence Awards are presented annually to lawyers and judges who work to promote a more racially and ethnically diverse legal profession. It is one of the highlights of the ABA Midyear Meeting. The 2008 Spirit of Excellence Awards will be presented during a luncheon on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Frequently, sponsors of the event will donate seats at their tables and make them available to law students interested in attending. One year position (August 2008-August 2009) with the ABA Commission on Domestic Violence in Washington, DC. Candidates must have earned a J.D. from an ABA-approved law school in 2007 or 2008, and be licensed to practice law in the United States or a candidate for the July 2008 bar exam. Judicial Opportunities Internship Program
Section of Litigation

Seeks to provide internship opportunities for minority or financially disadvantaged law students. The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority and/or financially disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in participating cities. Students may indicate geographic location preferences on their applications. Interns will receive an award of $1,500. Application deadline: January 18, 2008. Provides summer business law internship placements in Philadelphia, PA or Wilmington, DE to qualified first or second year law students. Writing Competitions Offer More Than a Little Extra Cash

6th Annual Writing Competition
Section of Health Law

The first-place award includes publication in The Health Lawyer journal, a $500 honorarium, airfare, hotel for two nights, and two days' expenses to attend the section's Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law Conference in February 2008 at the Omni San Diego Hotel, San Diego, California. 10th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Essay Competition
Grammy Foundation and ABA Forum Committee on the Entertainment and Sports Industries The ELI Essay Competition invites law students to write a 3,000-word paper on a compelling legal topic facing the music industry today. Award provides for more than $10,000 in scholarships to promising entertainment law students. Winning authors will present their essays at the prestigious ELI luncheon on February 8, 2008; receive airfare, hotel accommodations, and a ticket to the 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards and invitations to other GRAMMY Week activities. Council on Legal Education Opportunity and Section of Business Law Scholarship
Award: Four to five $1,000 scholarships to CLEO Fellow Scholars who are selected based on an essay competition. The CLEO Fellow Scholar must be a first or second year law student that participated in a CLEO pre-law summer institute program or a pre-law weekend program, is a member of the ABA Law Student Division and is interested in pursuing a career in business law. General Practice, Solo and Small Firms Division

The ABA General Practice, Solo and Small Firms Division offers a Mentoring Certificate Program for law students designed to expand upon traditional law school education, by focusing on introducing law students to the practical aspects of being a lawyer through real world activities and through the mentor's insight and guidance.
