ABA
Urges Funding Increase for the Legal Services Corporation
ABA
President Dennis W. Archer on June 14, 2004 and June 17, 2004 urged the
House
and Senate
Subcommittees on Commerce, Justice, State and the Judiciary to increase
the Legal Services Corporation's FY 2005 appropriation to the level necessary
to put the Corporation in the same position it was prior to drastic funding
cuts in the mid-90s. Citing wide bipartisan support and an overwhelming
need, the ABA
recommends that Congress fund LSC at $396.1 million, but no less than
the Corporation's
budget request of $352.4 million. Funding for the Legal Services Corporation
is a legislative
priority for the ABA and many state and local bar associations.
