Divisions
General
Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division
Quentin L
Marlin (Mercer University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I will be attending GP/Solo's Fall Meeting on October 19, 2006.
PROJECTS: I plan to work on GP/Solo's Law Student Committee's mentoring program.
Government
and Public Sector Lawyers Division
Kris Goss (University of Montana School of Law)
Judicial
Division
Michael Hooi (University of Florida Levin College of Law)
Division
for Public Education
Molly J Timko (Cuny School of Law at Queens College)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Fall Division for Public Education Standing/Advisory Committee meeting in Chicago, IL on October 6-7, 2006. I was the only law student at this meeting. It began at 11am on October 6 and ended at 2pm on October 7. I went to two outbreak sessions. One of these sessions addressed commemorative programming and the other session addressed the Division's need to reach out to other divisions within the ABA.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I am also involved in the Law Student Division for my Circuit as a Lieutenant Governor for Public Interest Work-A-Day and am hoping to attend the Fall Roundtable Meeting this weekend in Philadelphia. I am planning Work-A-Day activities at my school to assist youth at risk and assisting in the coordination of other Work-A-Day events in my Circuit.
ISSUES: The Division for Public Education would like to utilize the Law Student Division as a way to promote public education, especially with regard to Law Day and projects to assist Youth at Risk and to promote civic engagement.
PROJECTS: Aside from the Work-A-Day, I am also on a sub-committee within the Division for Public Education for Law Day. I also plan to promote the Division for Public Education's activities and website at CUNY Law School and within my Circuit. I have already sent some links to the Public Edu website on my school's listerv. I may consider writing a column in Student Lawyer based on my experience at the Fall meeting and plan to attend the Spring Division for Public Education Meeting which will also be held in Chicago.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I received a tremendous amount of information from the Division for Public Education meeting and met some really great mentors. The Division has so many wonderful programs planned for the upcoming year and some amazing publications.
Senior
Lawyers Division
Karen L Anslinger (William & Mary School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Council Meeting for the Senior Lawyers' Division on Oct. 21, 2006 in Chattanooga, TN. I did not make any report at this meeting, but I did participate in the Council's discussion regarding ethics and professional responsibility. I was also asked to be included on a SLD Committee for the promotion of ethics and professional responsibility.
ISSUES:
- The SLD Council focused on ethics and professional responsibility and the conflicting documents regarding professionalism that are currently floating around the states and the ABA itself. There are 150 different codes of conduct within the ABA. The SLD considered whether it should attempt to consolidate these codes into one document that the ABA House of Delegates could approve. The code would not replace the Model Rules, but would supplement it as a general guideline of professional courtesy (i.e. A lawyer will be on time for court; A lawyer will return phone calls and emails in a reasonably quick amount of time; etc.)
- The SLD is particularly concerned that people of OUR generation view legal ethics as merely something we need to know to pass the MPRE. Several of them mentioned that they've worked with young lawyers who are so eager to make money, or need funds so badly, that they engage in unethical or unprofessional behavior at the cost of the client and their own reputation. Additionally, the SLD expressed concern that law school and, therefore, law students, retains such an adversarial atmosphere, where the "real world" practice of law is much more cooperative in nature. They were concerned that students and young lawyers are engaging in unnecessarily agressive and competitive behavior when more could be accomplished, and the profession benefited, by a stronger emphasis on a collaborative approach.
- I think that the Law Student Division could play a HUGE role in bringing this to students' attention. I plan to write an article for the Student Lawyer regarding this issue and the experiences of the Senior Lawyers. But I think that the LSD could present a united front in this area as well. I don't necessarily think it has to be in conjunction with the SLD, but I definitely think it is an issue that could be discussed in further depth.
- One suggestion I have is that one of the "Coffee with Experience" meetings focus on dicussing legal ethics and professional responsibilities. It would be a good way for the SLD to voice their concerns and experiences and it would also be good for the LSD to hear what students have to say about their educational experiences regarding ethics, how it is taught, how concerned students are about it, etc.
PROJECTS: The SLD has created a committee to look into the development of a universal code of professional courtesy (as mentioned previously). Since I am the only "voice" of the younger, soon-to-be lawyers, I was asked to participate in this committe.
Sections
Section
of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice
Phyra M McCandless (University of San Francisco School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I have not attended any entity meetings as Ad Law's activities at the annual meeting conflicted with Law Student Division meetings.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the annual meeting where I participated as my school's ABA representative in the assembly and I received training for this position as well as a lieutenant governor position and the liaison role. I also participated in a task force on outreach to law students meeting for the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. I just attended the West Regional Fall Roundtable at Stanford Law School. I brought materials from the Ad Law Section to be passed out at registration. I recruited students to attend the meeting and I participated in the roundtable discussions, including encouraging students to attend other ABA meetings and to put on Work-A-Day programs at their schools.
ISSUES: The Section asked me to find out if the Law Student Division would co-sponsor a program it is having on government jobs on October 26. I have contacted the Law Student Division Chair, Director and Division Delegate Christopher Casey who indicated he would work with the Division Chair and Director on approval of the co-sponsorship.
PROJECTS: I plan to talk to the Ad Law Section's Task force for Law Students and Young Lawyers to suggest that it be greatly expanded as there are only 3 members. I also plan to suggest a great expansion of the website.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I will have a liaison notebook article printed in the December Student Lawyer. I am looking forward to meeting the Ad Law Section in person when I attend the Council meeting on October 28 in Washington, DC. I will bring up my concerns about student exposure to the Section at this meeting.
Section
of Antitrust Law
Robyn Rosen (University of Houston Law Center)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Antitrust Council Meeting at the Hawaii Annual Meeting in August. I was introduced to the group and able to meet the leadership. I have also participated in the monthly Membership & Equal Opportunity Committee conference calls.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the Division meeting at the Hawaii Annual Meeting. I also attended the St. Louis Fall Rountable where I participated in the 13th Circuit Meeting, as well as all other meetings throughout the day.
ISSUES: There has been an ongoing discussion about the $10 fee for law students and potentially eliminating it. The Section is promoting CLEs during its Washington D.C. Spring Meeting and offering admittance to the program to all law students in the area intersted in attending.
PROJECTS: I have been working on creating a survey to be sent out to all law students who are currently members of the Antitrust Section to better understand why they joined and what their particular interest in the section is. I hope to be able to promote programs to the law student members of the entity. Also, I have worked with Robert Langer (council member) to promote the Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project. (A fellowship program provided by the Antitrust Section Leadership to law students to work in the consumer protection and antitrust departments of Attorneys General Offices in U.S. states and territories. It is an 8 week paid fellowship program.)
Section
of Business Law
Jermaine A Carroll (Brigham Young University J Reuben Clark Law School)
Criminal
Justice Section Council
Joshua Larson (Hamline University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I was unable to make it to the annual meeting this summer. There is an upcoming Council meeting in New Orleans that I plan to attend. The conference will be held on November 2-3, 2006.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I was unable to make it to the annual meeting this summer. There is a law school division round table in several weeks, but I will be unable to attend.
ISSUES: In New Orleans, we will be looking at the devis impact that Hurricane Katrina had on criminal justice professionals. Even today, a full year later, lawyers, prosecutors, judges, corrections officials, and police are struggling to work in a system where courthouses have been destroyed, evidence has been lost, inmates and defendants whereabouts are unknown, lawyers offices have been closed, and crime is on the rise. It has become abundantly clear that criminal justice systems around the country need to be better prepared to deal with disasters, whether they come in the form of hurricanes, pandemics, earthquakes, industrial accidents, tornadoes, tsunamis, or terrorist attacks. The ABA Criminal Justice Section has designed the New Orleans conference to help criminal justice professionals learn from the lessons of Katrina about how to do so.
PROJECTS: I hope to come away with a good understanding of the issues at the conference, and I then plan to present a report to my school's Student Bar Association.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I'm presently working at the Hennepin County attorney's office. This summer, Minneapolis suffered a spike in murders and other violent crimes. Additionally, our County Attorney is running for U.S. Senate. It has been interesting studying news paper reports and press releases. So far, there haven't been any Dukakas/Willie Green-type story-lines, but the election is a number of weeks off. I will be closely watching to see this strong intersection of politics and criminal justice.
Criminal
Justice Section-Corrections and Sentencing Committee
Cassandra Hearn (Suffolk University Law School)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Criminal Justice council and membership meetings at the ABA Hawaii Annual Meeting. There, I introduced myself to the council and various members present. I took the floor at one point and detailed my goals as the student liaison to the Division. I was the only student liaison present at the entity meeting. I also voted on several key problems before the council including the election of new officers, ratification of revised bylaws, and other issues before the criminal justice entity.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I have attended two circuit law school division meetings wearing my lieutenant governor hat as well as my liaison hat. I have suggested ideas to this group for establishing the groundwork to create a bail to jail national mock trial competition (seeding circuits against each other nation-wide). I have also suggested an interactive networking event to be held in each circuit focused on connecting criminal justice student members with bar members (perhaps with a spotlight on an ABA initiative such as at-risk youth and criminal sentencing).
ISSUES: One of the goals of the sentencing committee is to form a Subcommittee on State Sentencing. It wants to connect the work on state sentencing issues of the Committee with the relevant work of other national groups. I think this might be a good area for students to become involved because our student members are spread all across the country and have representatives from every state; this may be an open door for students who want to learn about how their individual state handles sentencing regulations and issues, and might function as viable forum for student impact and feedback on up and coming local sentencing issues.
PROJECTS: I am trying to put together the foundation for the circuit-wide networking event focused on criminal justice as mentioned above. Ideally, I d like to have one event in November in the first circuit only as a test to measure the success of the forum, then find student members in each circuit who could implement a similar event in their circuits throughout the year.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I would like to have a corner on the committee's web page dedicated to updates from the student front.
Criminal
Justice Section-Defense Function Committee
Antonio S. Moore (University of Baltimore School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I will be receiving a schedule of meetings.
DIVISION MEETINGS: ABA Regional Circuit Roundtable. I was very involved, asking questions and giving insight and input when needed. I was also an effective resource to answer questions from some of the other attendees.
ISSUES: There are general issues related to the Defense Function and Services overall, but none that need immediate Division input.
PROJECTS: Defense Function and Services Committee information session
ABA - LSD Promotional events
LRAP Program
Law Students for Government Accountability SBA/ABA - Open Forum Innocence Project
OTHER ACTIVITIES: The focus is currently on promoting the ABA - Law Student Division overall, and educating the students on the Defense Function and Services Committee. Once those efforts show results, then I will move into determining which pressing issues to take on, and how to handle them.
Criminal
Justice Section-International Crime Committee
Genevieve Whitaker (Stetson University College of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I have not attended any meetings as of yet, however I did meet with outgoing commmittee chair in Hawaii and we have also communicated via email. We discussed some of ideas that I have for the committee and how to get law students interested in the committee. I recently made contact with the new chair and have drafted a message to send out to the student committee members.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I have not attended any Division meeting but I do plan on attending their Spring Meeting.
PROJECTS: I am planning to work on a policy initiative for the U.S.Ratification of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to include ways in which law students who are interested in international criminal law can learn more about ICC and possibly engage in some lobbying efforts in that regard.
Criminal
Justice Section-Juvenile Justice Committee
Stephanie Wynn (William Mitchell College of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: The ABA officers at William Mitchell held a "meet and greet" at a local restaurant to give students an opportunity to ask questions regarding ABA student membership benefits, networking opportunities, and 1L elections. As part of the group, I was able to discuss my position and answer questions relating to the liaison program. I also used this opportunity to promote upcoming events that students could get involved with.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I will be attending the ABA Criminal Justice Conference in New Orleans focusing on Disaster Preparedness and the Criminal Justice System, November 2-5. I will also attend the Juvenile Justice Committee meeting on November 4.
ISSUES: At this time, I am unaware of any issues. However, I will keep the Division updated if something comes up at the entity meeting in November.
PROJECTS: William Mitchell is taking part in the Youth-at-Risk Initiative. At the end of October, we will be tabling at the school to raise money for local projects relating at-risk youth. It will also provide students an opportunity to sign up to volunteer for Bridge for Runaway Youth. This is organization in the Twin Cities that provides shelter, food, medication, and counseling for runaways. Furthermore, we are in the process of organizing a day for youth interested in the legal field to shadow a law student for a day. As part of the job shadow day, I am working with local judges to see if we can have law students and youth observe a day in court.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I am working with William Mitchell, law school professors, and practitioners to organize a juvenile justice forum, to provide law students and other local practitioners an opportunity to learn about emerging topics in the area of juvenile justice. It is anticipated that this forum would take place in February or March.
Criminal
Justice Section-Prosecution Function Committee
Carrie M Harris (William and Mary School of Law)
ISSUES: In reading the meeting minutes, there are discussions of the right to counsel at initial appearances, electronic recording of juvenile interrogations, crime and incarceration rates, DNA Standards, and a witness intimidation project. I don't have any independent knowledge of these projects, but I have a meeting scheduled during the New Orleans conference to discuss topics important to the Committee.
PROJECTS: At this point, I am looking to upcoming events being put on by the Criminal Justice Section. The CJ Section website does not list events by committee, so my goal is to speak with the Chairs of my committee to get input on what upcoming event they really think should be pushed from their perspective. then I will be in contact with the Student Lawyer.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: The Criminal Justice Section will be convening the Criminal Justice Section Council & Committee Meetings in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 2-5. This will be my first opportunity to meet with members of the Committee. I have been in contact with the Committee Chair and the ABA Criminal Justice Section Director to discuss my involvement with the organization. During the upcoming meeting, I will be meeting with these individuals to discuss issues of interest to the Law Student Division as well as ways in which I can increase my involvement.

Andrew J. Tig Wartluft (University of Akron School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: Section Council and General Meetings at ABA Annual Meeting, Honalulu, HI (moderately involved)
Teleconferences:
Council Meeting (Listened)
Membership Committee Meeting (Highly Involved)
ISSUES: The DR Section is discussing ways to actively promote the division to law students with an emphasis on ways to retain those memberships as the students become professionals. The DR Section is discussing the possibility of offering to co-sponsor an event with the LSD at an ABA meeting.
PROJECTS: I am actively involved in the Section's Membership Committee and their development of a plan to increase student membership and retain those members after graduation.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: The Section is also generally pursuing ways to increase electronic participation by members. The Section's newsletter has recently moved to electronic form and the Section is attemping to increase the percentage of members who obtain Section information electronically.
Section
of Environment, Energy, and Resources
Barbara Leiterman (Pace University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: San Diego Fall Meeting: described efforts to recruit student members at the Membership Group meeting 10/6. Suggestion by Young Lawyers Division to create a teleconference series on how did I get my job that would appeal to law students. The renewable energy teleconferences are a great model for teleconferences. Suggested Environmental Law Society s (ELS s) as a natural source of new members. Described James Stulhtrager and my proposal to give ELSs a free SEER membership to raffle off in fundraisers. Strategized with the Smart Growth Task Force Chair. Must have told twenty people about the Law Student Division in response to the question, so what do you liaison to? Liaison ribbon on my name tag was a great idea.
DIVISION MEETINGS: None as of yet. Registered to go to Division meeting in Philadelphia this weekend, but may have to cancel due to family obligations.
ISSUES: EPA Energy Challenge proposal to SEER
- Once the SEER Council has approved the Energy Challenge, I will contact student members of the Section to gauge interest & gather volunteers
- Spoke with Howard Hoffman, Lee Paddock and Dana Jonusaitis regarding the Energy Challenge
- Suggested using the Ad Council to help craft promotional campaign for the Energy Challenge
- Section solicits Division input on recruitment
- Regarding if SEER membership should be free, I said no during conference call last week because $5 represents the value of the membership. Ie. if it is free it can t be worth much.
- Learned about Brenda s subsidy program (not for law students, but for young, minority, NPO or govt lawyers)
PROJECTS: Energy Challenge (see above) once it is approved by the SEER Council
- Email to law student SEER members introducing myself
- Announcement to Pace ELS re what Fall Meeting was like, here are goodies I got that represent some of the goodies you can get once you join SEER
- Brenda is subsidy program for SEER membership. Do the demographics of the Fall Meeting attendees accurately represent SEER membership as a whole? Does SEER membership accurately represent the demographics of environment, energy and resources attorneys?
Section
of Family Law
Daniel M Lipschutz (Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law Yeshiva University)
Section
of Health Law
Katie Rose Fink (Saint Louis University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the ABA Annual Meeting in August, and the Health Law Section included me in all of their events including the CLE on Elder Law, Council Dinner, Council meeting, and the two luncheons. In late October during the Washington Healthcare Summit I will have have the opportunity to lead a breakfast meeting for law students attending the conference. Other details about my involvement in the Summit will be reported in March. I participate on monthly conference calls and as a member of the Section's Membership Committee I am working to increase student membership.
ISSUES: Issues concerning the Division did not arise during the Annual Meeting. Issues arising from the Washington Healthcare Summit later in October will be addressed in a later report. Currently the Section's primary objective this year appears to focus upon increasing membership and my role will be to increase student membership.
PROJECTS:
- The young lawyers in the Health Law Section are working on a publication about health law topics to be used by young lawyers as a quick reference when they need an overview of an area of health law. I have been invited to work with the young lawyers to provide input to this project so that the publication will also benefit law students interested in health law.
- Working in cooperation with last year's liaison, I have continued to encourage Student Contributors to write articles for the Health Lawyer, the Section's by-monthly web-based publication. The response has been great and we have students authors lined up to write through 2007.
- Later in October, will announce the Annual Law Student Writing Competition, "Medicaid Funding Issues." Papers are due December 8.
- The has created a speakers bureau to help schools who wish to find a health lawyer to speak at their school. Currently, the bureau is assisting the University of Denver find speakers for their Health Law Week in the spring.
- During the Healthcare Summit in late October, I will address the Section leaders about how to make the teleconferences more available to students. Currently the fee is $45 fee for law students to listen to the teleconferences. We are either going to try and promote the use of single conference line for a group of students at various law schools, or decrease the price so individuals students can listen.
Section
of Individual Rights and Responsibilities
Paula Shapiro (The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: Although IRR has not held any formal meetings since my appointment, I have had the opportunity to meet with the Section on at least four occasions since school began, and I have had a discussion with the Assistant Director regarding project ideas.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I have participated in one conference call for the 11th Circuit, as both Liaison and Executive Lt. Governor. I also held a Circuit meeting for the board at my apartment at the end of August. I have been in at least thrice-weekly contact with the Circuit Governor and other Lt. Governors planning events in the Circuit, including a great panel about careers held at Catholic. I also plan on attending the IRR Fall Meeting located in DC at the end of October.
Additionally, I will attend the Circuit Fall Roundtable in Philadelphia on October 14.
ISSUES: The Section has asked me to work with them in developing a short, national newsletter for law students to inform them about the Section and the Section's amazing work. As I work with them on this, I will be contacting the Division in order to combine efforts.
PROJECTS: Regarding the newsletter as described above, I outlined 6 column ideas and have been working to develop these in more detail.
I also submitted my liaison notes for the Student Lawyer Magazine.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: Just getting out information about how to get involved. The Section is discussing the possibility of sponsoring a writing competition to select student written articles to be included in the IRR Human Rights Magazine. Certainly, to be taken into consideration are the hurdles that must be overcome with the editorial board, since there is no specific pages given to law student articles. We discussed the possibility of creating a supplementary edition dedicated solely to articles written for the competition. I would love to get input from the Division on how to set this up.
Section
of Intellectual Property Law
Matthew D. Asbell (Benjamin N. Cardozo School of LAw Yeshiva University)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I plan to attend the Fall Leadership Meeting in mid-November, the 22nd annual IP Conference in April, 2007 and the annual meeting in August, 2007. I have participated in 3 telephone meetings: (1) with the predecessor liaison; (2) with the predecessor liaison and the Section's Membership, Marketing and Communications Manager; and (3) with the Section Director.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I have attended two teleconferences with my circuit governor, Cherie Phoenix and the Lt. Governors. I have also identified and secured speakers for the 2nd Circuit's Fall Roundtable.
ISSUES: The section is considering putting together a mentoring program including an initiative at law schools to interest students in careers in IP law.
The American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation (AIPLEF), created by the IPL Section and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) to provide scholarships for minority students studying in the field of IP law, will be holding an auction and gala dinner on Wednesday, October 25.
PROJECTS: My primary project for the section is the initiation of a sustainable database of IP club leaders and advisors at law schools. The idea is to provide a better means to access students interested in IP for purposes of promotion of meetings and events and more participation in the section by student members. Initially, I am collecting such information for the 2nd circuit, with the idea that if it proves feasible and helpful, we can expand the effort nationwide and publish the information on the section website or elsewhere for private access by section leadership.
I am also exploring the possibility of organizing a mentorship program for our April meeting. The concept is provide a more substantive basis for mentors and mentees to interact and produce work-product that can be used for the furtherance of section goals.

ENTITY MEETINGS: I was able to attend the Labor and Employment Law Section's Council Meeting in Hawaii with the outgoing Liaison. In addition to the Council Meeting, I was also able to attend the majority of the Section's CLE programming and events at Annual. Additionally, I was able to speak with the outgoing Liaison in depth about the Section s activities and programs from the previous year. Since the Annual Meeting, I have participated in conference calls for the Section's Law Student Outreach Task force and I will be attending the Section's Fall Council Meeting the weekend of October 27-29 in Montreal, Quebec.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the Annual Meeting in Hawaii where I participated in the Liaison Training, Lt. Governor Training, and the 8th Circuit Meeting. I also attended the Fall Roundtable in St. Louis and participated in all of the scheduled events for that meeting. In addition, I participated in 8th Circuit Lt. Governor conference calls.
ISSUES: At the Fall Council meeting the Section will be discussing the issue of Section membership fees for law students. I have briefly discussed this issue with the Section's Law Student Outreach Task force.
PROJECTS: I am currently on a 5 person committee of the Section's Law Student Outreach Task force which is trying to get more law students involved in the Section by making students aware of the opportunities the Section has for law students through published materials and Labor and Employment Panels at law schools.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I am continuing work on the Section's pilot program which places 3 law students as liaisons to 3 of the Section's sub-committees. The Section's Law Student Outreach Task force is currently reviewing applications for these 3 positions and will hopefully have students appointed soon.
Law
Practice Management Section

DIVISION MEETINGS: Annual Meeting, Hawaii--I was introduced to the section, talked about my willingness to be involved, was assigned to committees.
ISSUES: LPM is always looking for law student feedback on their publications.
PROJECTS: I am working with the publications committee to review manuscripts that are relevant to law students.
Section
of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar
Cesely M Hopper (Arizona State University)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Section meeting and lunches during the Annual Meeting in Hawaii. As the incoming liaison, I sat and listened to the sessions. I was able to talk to the former liaison, Sara Ibrahim extensively about what the position entails, what the Section is currently doing and what they plan to do in the future. I also attended the Joint Accreditation Committee and Council Retreat September 29-October 1 in Chicago. There were extensive discussions of bar passage rates, diversity in the law schools, the quality of legal education, and other pertinent council issues. I was able to speak for law students throughout the day during the discussions.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended most of the Law Student Division meeting during the Annual Meeting in Hawaii as an ABA Representative for my school and I was able to vote during the assembly. I also attended both the ABA Representative and Liaison Training Meetings.
ISSUES: The Division would probably be interested in the Section's work on the Accreditation process of law schools and their concern about bar passage and diversity.
PROJECTS: I plan to work on projects related to accreditation standards (especially in terms of diversity in the law schools) and report on bar passage rates.
Litigation
Section
Tessa King (Southwestern University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Litigation Leader's Council Meeting in Chicago from September 28-30.
Each day I attended a Council Section Meeting and I also attended the New Leaders Meeting where I received a huge binder from the Division regarding all policies and procedures.
I also attended a committee membership and marketing meeting where the Litigation section is working on a "speed networking" project where lawyers would meet with other lawyers and law students for short periods of time before trading seats, continuing to meet more people.
I attended the extracurricular section events at night, such as the River Tour and the meet and greet at the House of Blues.
In January I am attending another Council Section Meeting in Napa.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I have not attended any division meetings as a student liaison is appointed to each Litigation committee. They will then report to me. Please see below for more information.
PROJECTS:
- I am currently working with Kristin Dobski, ABA Litigation Staff Member and with Steve Lamb, Litigation Director of Membership and Marketing, in appointing one student liaison to each Litigation Section committee.
- I personally appointed each person to their position after reviewing each resume and I am currently contacting each new liaison regarding their job in their respective committee.
- Each committee liaison will attend section committee events and will report back to me so that I can then forward any relevant information to the ABA Student Division. Also, each committee liaison will work on one project within their committee with their members.
- I am so excited about this! I am still in the midst of accepting responses back from the selected students and I am also in the midst of sorting through who will be these students contact person within each committee and getting this information to each student.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: The Section of Litigation is doing very well. Membership continues to grow. The Council Section is very interested in getting more young people involved in the Litigation Section along with more diversity among its members. I will also inform the ABA regarding any upcoming events that might benefit or interest law students.
Section
of Public Contract Law
Elizabeth A Raines (George Washington University Law School)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the annual meeting in Hawaii and participated fully in all activities and discussions. I have also been in constant contact with members of the section and, while I do not have a vote on the council, I am copied on all email votes.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended meetings for the division in Hawaii, but have not had the opportunity to attend any other events.
ISSUES: The section is currently implementing a plan to increase membership diversity by, among other actions, attending various diversity programs throughout the country. Also, the section has recently voted to increase the monetary prize for student winners of its journal's annual writing competition.
PROJECTS: I am currently piecing together a law student division web-page for the section which will include information about section events and current issues in public contract law. I also hope to include a list of firms with public contract law practices (to aid in career searches). Finally, the section chair and I are interested in developing a law student- young lawyer discussion board on the site, but we are still trying to figure out the logistics of this plan.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I will be attending the sections meeting in San Antonio, TX in November. At this meeting, I will be making a report to the council and seeking ideas for further involvement of students within the section. Following the completed development of the site, I hope to have a liaison notes column published announcing its availability.
Section
of Public Utility, Communications and Transportation Law
Mary Goehring (Franklin Pierce Law Center)
ENTITY MEETINGS: The Fall Council Meeting was held Oct 5-7, 2006 in Hot Springs, VA; however, I was unable to attend. The Section Director has agreed to send me meeting minutes as soon as they are available.
ISSUES: The Section sent a survey to all student members to gather input. Feedback was requested on general interests, preferred communication method, topics of interest, demographics, interests for the future. Additionally, website changes were recently implemented and I provided comments on how useful the changes seemed from my perspective as a student user.
PROJECTS:
- Currently reviewing the Section's Annual Report to identify any important issues for students.
- Worked with SBA at my school to fill local positions and to raise awareness of ABA among students on campus.
- I hope to attend the Spring Council Meeting to be held in Laguna Niguel, CA, March 21-25, 2007 and I plan to attend the Annual Spring Meeting in Washington, DC on April 16, 2007.
- Work with Section leadership to develop ideas on how to increase Section membership of younger members.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: The Section's Vice Chair of Electricity and Water Committee recently passed away and the Chair is seeking a replacement but has not yet made an announcement. A movement is also underway that may lead to a future change in the Section's name.
Section
of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law-Probate and Trust Division
Anthony Marinaccio (Whittier Law School)
Section
of Real Property, Probate and Trust Law-Real Property Division
James J Thorpe (St. Thomas University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I was unable to attend the Annual Meeting in HA but I plan on attending the November conference in Arizona where I plan to discuss opportunities to increase membership in the Real property Division.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the Fall Roundtable in Atlanta, GA. My level of involvement in the meeting was quite heavy. I serve as a Lieutenant Governor for the 5th Circuit in Communications. I spoke about problems that exists currently and potential solutions that we as a circuit can exercise to improve communication. I also met individuals in many schools that are SBA Presidents, ABA Representatives, and other ABA LSD Liaisons. I am also the ABA rep for my school, so I gathered information to bring back to our student body on the circuit meeting. I also discussed with other members at the meeting about students interested in the practice Real Estate law.
PROJECTS: Recently, I participated in a function hosted by my school entitled "Real Estate Lunch & Learn," consisting of two professors and two practicing attorneys. I am also in the process of writing an article for an e-publication that will be sent out to RPPT members. The articles is related to the Real Property section with respect to current issues that face the South Florida Real Estate Market.
Section
of Science and Technology Law
Clara R. Cottrell (Wake Forest University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Annual Meeting in Hawaii. I was invited to join the Membership Committee and the Council Committee. I attended the following meetings: Membership Committee meeting, Chair-elect Planning meeting, ABA/AAAS Meeting, Council Meeting, and the Officer Meeting. I also attended the Annual Section Luncheon and the Section Reception and Social Event. During the meetings, my advice was sought regarding ways for the Section to reach out to the student membership. The Section is very open to allowing students to write articles for the SciTech Lawyer and for sponsoring writing competitions, both of which were my suggestions. The Section also wants student involvement in the committees.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I plan on attending the Circuit Meeting in October.
ISSUES: Overall, the Section is VERY interested in getting the students involved. This is my goal for my term.
PROJECTS: I will be writing for the SciTech Lawyer and will be asking other students to also write articles.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I have already written for the Student Lawyer and plan to write another note for the Liaison notebook shortly. SciTech decided to start a student listserv that I will be moderating with an email address set up by my university. I will be writing for my university student paper highlighting the benefits of ABA membership and outlining things to be aware of like the writing competitions and leadership positions.

Heather McKee (University of Nebraska College of Law)
Tort
Trial and Insurance Practice Section
Terry C. Bruner (Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: ABA Annual Meeting - offered comments to Circuit Governor regarding initiative on clinic assistance programs for military service members. TIPS Meeting at Annual Meeting - attended Council meeting, where I learned about the Section's possible involvement in the Student Hurricane Network; appointed to the Law Student Board of the Section, as well as committee on publications within the Law Student Board. I also serve as the de facto point person on law student membership within the Section. Additionally, I attended the new leadership meetings within the Section, as well as the Section's Annual Award Luncheon, where one of my law professors was awarded the distinguished career service award.
DIVISION MEETINGS: While I have attended no Division meetings, I have been in frequent communication with the 13th Circuit Governor and am working with him on selected issues.
ISSUES: TIPS is actively recruiting Division members and sponsors a well-known writing competition and active participation in the entity through its student vice-chair program. There is talk in the offing about making many of the events at TIPS meetings more economical for students, but I have not presented any formal recommendation to the Council. This will in all likelihood occur at the Midyear Meeting in Miami. TIPS is also interested in getting more student input for the Student TIPSter Newsletter, which is an invaluable source for student publication.
PROJECTS:
- I am working with the Law Student Board to increase membership and strategic involvement at targeted law schools, including one in particular within my home circuit.
- Additionally, I am preparing a possible presentation before TIPS Council on the matter of discounted tickets for Division members.
- As vice-chair of the International Committee, I will be seeking to assist in planning a national conference on transportation, maritime, and international issues, which is tentatively scheduled for sometime next semester on the Gulf Coast. In this capacity, Division input might be solicited.

DIVISION MEETINGS: I was at the ABA annual meeting in Honolulu, and I will be attending our circuit meeting in Atlanta this month.
PROJECTS: I will be getting more involved with these after our entity meeting, but the main projects the entity is involved with include a major publication, "The Communication Lawyer", and a new journal which has just been published for the first time, "The Journal of International Media & Entertainment Law". The entity is also considering adding for the first-time a series of one-hour teleconference seminars for its members.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: The entity is currently planning the 2007 Annual Meeting in Key Largo, FL, and a joint program with the NAB on "Representing Your Local Broadcaster," which is held annually in Las Vegas.

ENTITY MEETINGS: I will be attending the Forum's Annual Meeting October 12-15, 2006 in Century City, CA to present a report at the Governing Committee Meeting.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the Annual Meeting in Hawaii in August where I participated in the Division's Liaison Training and the Entertainment and Sports CLE presentation. I also met with the Entertainment and Sports Governing Committee to discuss how I should prepare for the Forum's Annual Meeting in October.
ISSUES: At this point, no such issues have been brought to my attention. But, last year a vote was passed to raise the Forum's law student rate in order to provide more incentives for law students. This has created quite an issue during my term.
PROJECTS: Since returning from Hawaii, I have been recruiting law students interested in entertainment and sports law from across the country. I have been in contact with the leaders of the entertainment and sports societies at all of the law schools in locations where the entertainment industry is prevalent (i.e. Los Angeles, NYC and Chicago). The number of law students who registered for the Forum's Annual Meeting is at a record high.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I have been involved with recruiting and planning for the Forum's Annual Meeting. Afterwards, I hope to meet with the Forum Chair. All in all, it's been a great experience.

I will also be discussing how the committee can more effectively connect to the Law Student Division.
ISSUES: Currently, there are no issues facing the SCAFL that the Law Student Division has an interest in, although I am going to be discussing a nationwide network for affiliated student groups at the Fall meeting.
PROJECTS: I am trying to establish a national network for student groups affiliated with Armed Forces Law. I have secured a National TWEN page as a temporary medium for communication and planning. I hope to use the system to promote the entity and the Law Student Division at the local level.

ISSUES: I have not had successful contact with my entity as of yet.
PROJECTS: I have coordinated with various organizations here at Drake Law School to encourage student participation hosting tables and providing voter registration cards and absentee ballots forms. I also am volunteering 20 hrs with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board and plan on writing an article about my experiences there. Also in coordination with Drake organizations, I plan on coordinating student volunteers to help during the elections by helping man polling places and by driving those registered voters needing transportation to the polls.
Standing

Joshua A Dorothy (Hamline University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the Standing Committee's (SCJI) meeting during the Annual Meeting in Honolulu. I also attended several panels and programs sponsored by SCJI at the Annual Meeting.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended Division events at the Annual Meeting
ISSUES: Judicial independence is a hard topic to get students interested in, so SCJI does not actively seek the Division's input; however, the Committee does welcome student input.
PROJECTS: I plan to assist SCJI in its Least Understood Branch programming and am seeking to find ways to get students involved in civic affairs programming modeled on the Least Understood Branch program.
Standing
Committee on Law and National Security
Lindsay Lyon Rodman (Harvard Law School)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I have been to two breakfasts of my group. I have not been to other meetings. I have met a few times in person with the ABA organizer for the committee to discuss upcoming initiatives. I have still not officially transitioned with the former liaison, which is one thing impeding my progress.
DIVISION MEETINGS: Participated in a conference call. Attended the first Circuit Board meeting.
ISSUES: How to involve more students, incorporate students in mentoring programs, etc. All contingent on sending emails out to students once Michael and I transition.
PROJECTS: There is a conference in November that I plan to go to. I want to get students more involved, and have already helped plan the National Security panel at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th Circuit roundtable. I want to get in touch with national security clubs around the country and link them into a central source, and give them ABA SCOLNS resources.
Standing
Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants

ENTITY MEETINGS: I have not attended any meetings besides the annual meeting. However, I am going to attend the SCLAID's annual meeting in North Carolina on November 11, 2006.

Stephen Charles Lessard (Georgetown University Law Center)
Standing
Committee on Substance Abuse
Christopher M Meissner (Cleveland Marshall College of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: Our Committee's first meeting since my taking office will be by teleconference on November 10th, 2006. I will be participating fully.
PROJECTS: Although I have some policy-related ideas, I will be taking cues from the members I meet during the November meeting to determine the feasibility of their implementation.
Commissions/Other Organizations
Individual

ENTITY MEETINGS: I will be attending the AIDS Coordinating Committee will meet November 3-4, 2006 in Washington, D.C.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the ABA convention in Hawaii this past August, where I received my liaison training and participated in general Division activities. I also attended a CLE.

ALI/ABA
Nancy Eyl (Georgetown University Law Center)
Center
for Professional Responsibility
Adam M Shestak (Duke University School of Law)
PROJECTS: I am in the process of discussing two possible ways in which the Center for Professional Responsibility can collaborate with the Law Student Division: 1) Providing informational resources and contacts that ABALSD Law School Representatives can draw upon during any events at their schools that are focused on ethics or Professional Responsibility, 2) Finding a way to express to law firms the value and importance of giving summer associates/clerks practical exposure to the ethical issues and questions that are common in the practice of law.
Central
European and Eurasian Law Initiative (CEELI)
Alison Umberger (George Mason University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: ABA Annual Meeting, Honolulu, HI: International Rule of Law Luncheon, Judicial Independence Panel, Liaison Training,
CEELI Legal Specialist Orientation, Washington, DC: September 11-15
DIVISION MEETINGS:11th Circuit Meeting via conference call July 9;
11th Circuit Meeting August 27
ISSUES: The various rule of law initiatives (CEELI, Africa, Asia, Latin America) are consolidating somewhat - at least into a single space. The Law Student Division may want to consider modifying the CEELI liaison position to cover all of these programs?
PROJECTS: I hope to put together something for the Student Lawyer magazine during the spring semester.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: To participate as a CEELI specialist you must have at least 5 years of experience in the field. This may not be of immediate interest to law students, but is definitely a long term pro bono opportunity that they may want to keep in mind.
Commission
on Domestic Violence
Julie Ann Neubauer (Northern Illinois University College of Law)
Commission
on Lawyer Assistance Programs
Renee Champagne (Western New England School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended the
19th National Conference on Lawyer Assistance Programs located in San Francisco, CA on October 24 - 27, 2006.
I was given the opportunity to sit in on all the meetings, including the Commission's business meetings.
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 11th Circuit Governors Fall Roundtable was held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on Saturday, October 14th.
PROJECTS: I am proposing three projects, two of which I am requesting funding from the Commission in order to complete. For the third project, I am requesting a grant directly from the ABA because the project will be for Western New England College School of Law students.
- The first project I propose is an information packet I will develop and send to the ABA representatives at each school in the Northeast. I have chosen the Northeast because I know many of the ABA representatives in this area and I believe they will distribute the information to their fellow students. Included in the packet will be a letter from me introducing myself, the Commission and the state LAP. Additionally, there will be further information about the Commission, the state LAP, the Toolkit, Alcohol Anonymous (AA) meetings, depression and bipolar support group meetings, etc. Each packet will be tailored to the law school to which it is being sent.
- The second project I propose is a scaled down version of the proposed project for the law schools in the Northeast. For this project I will provide a letter introducing myself, the Commission, and the LAPs. However, there will be general information about AA and mental health support groups rather than specific information for each law school.
- The third project I propose is called Holistic Wellness at WNEC. As I mentioned above, I will requesting a grant from the ABA for this project. I would like to provide WNEC School of Law students with an information packet similar to the one I will be sending to the law schools in the Northeast. There will be other information such as smoking cessation, exercise, and weight loss programs. I would like to get students interested in the information by providing chair massages at a discounted rate just prior to finals. I think this is a unique way to capture students attention.
Commission
on Mental and Physical Disabilities Law
Esme V Grant (Golden Gate University School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I attended events sponsored by the Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law (CMPDL) during the ABA Annual Meeting in August. I was able to attend the liaison training provided by the Law School Division. I also was able to attend the presentation that the CMPDL held on defending clients with disabilities. Although I will be unable to attend the CMPDL November meeting due to budgetary constraints, I hope to have adequate communication with members of the committee and my subcommittees so that there can be a law student presence at the meeting.
DIVISION MEETINGS: In addition to Law Student Division events at the Annual Meeting, I attended the Fall Roundtable at Stanford which was a wonderfully orchestrated conference. I attended this meeting as a Lieutenant Governor but I made some important contacts with fellow students as well as attorneys from the Civil Rights Panel.
ISSUES: I've had somewhat of an issue with communication with COMPDL. They have been great in keeping me on their email lists, but a lot of my inquiries go unanswered. This is something I plan on working on in the next couple of months so our ideas can come together. I cannot, therefore, be terribly specific but the entity is generally interested in promoting the admission of more law students with disabilities, offering more legal education on disability law, and informing law students of all the disability issues that touch every aspect of the law.
PROJECTS:
- I am in the process of submitting a proposal to host the 14th Circuit's meeting at Golden Gate University. It would be wonderful to have more of a focus on disability law at this meeting, so I intend on proposing this as well.
- I contacted CMPDL a few weeks ago about submitting an article to Student Lawyer so this is a work in progress.
- I am working on is increasing the disability law courses offered at law schools. I am currently taking tabs on what kind of courses are offered in disability law and what law schools are taking advantage of this curriculum. I have found in my own experience that I have to incorporate disability issues into them myself. I plan on heavily promoting the importance of these issues.
- I am working on ensuring that all law students with disabilities are properly accommodated. This is a more personal process, I have been gathering critiques from various students to appropriately address their issues.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: I just want to add that I am very proud of this position and hope to secure better communication with CMPDL in the next couple of months. They are an incredible group of people and I think it is nothing but beneficial for law students to have knowledge of the great things that they do.
Commission
on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession
Cedrick Frazier (William Mitchell College of Law)
Commission
on Women in the Profession
Mia D. McNeil (Thomas M. Cooley School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: Last meeting attended was the business meeting in Hawaii. Gave a report on the success of Law Students Think Pink and was approached to work with the health section of the committee to continue a breast cancer awareness.
DIVISION MEETINGS: The only division meeting I have attended since my appointment has been the Hawaii Annual Meeting. Acted as the Executive Lt. Gov, but very limited input in the meeting. Next division meeting is in Atlanta on Oct. 13.
ISSUES: The Commission would like to work on another campaign reaching out to law school with the Division regarding breast cancer awareness.
PROJECTS: I'm working on a panel to discuss the invisibility of women in the profession.
National Student Directors
National
Student Director for the Arbitration Competition
Abraham N Oler (Northwestern University School of Law)
National
Student Director for the Client Counseling Competition
Cordell Carter III (Notre Dame Law School)
ENTITY MEETINGS: I facilitated an informational lunchtime meeting designed to inform and educate all law students about the ABA LSD competitions. I ran the meeting from start to finish and arranged for the SBA to pay for catering. I also helped my school's ABA representatives craft their message to all law students for the ABA membership drive.
DIVISION MEETINGS: On September 9, I attended the annual Competitions Meeting at the Chicago office where I met all of my fellow committee members and worked on this year's rules and problems over the course of 36 hours. I was actively involved in the rule updates and problem creation.
ISSUES: The main issue facing the Client Counseling Competition Subcommittee is the Midwest Regional competition. The rule for law school hosts is that the victorious school must host the competition the following year. Last year, Loyola-Chicago won the regional competition but is unable to host due to their commitment to host the regional Negotiation Competition, so we are left with no host for the Midwest region. I am working with the 7th Circuit Governor to find a host school now.
PROJECTS: Finding a host school for the Midwest Region is my primary goal right now. I am also seeking to increase the number of teams that will participate in the Client Counseling Competition this year.
National
Student Director for the National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC)
Jason C. Langley (Ohio State University Moritz College of Law)
DIVISION MEETINGS: I attended the Competitions Committee Meeting on September 9 in Chicago. I was involved in overall Committee discussions on how to make our competitions stronger and more well attended. I was more heavily involved in our subcommittee meetings where we planned out our year and changed the rules for the competition.
ISSUES: Gaining additional membership and participation at the competitions.
PROJECTS: I am currently helping the NAAC subcommittee plan the regional competitions along with the ABA staff. I am soliciting other schools to participate in the NAAC.
National
Student Director for the Negotiation Competition
Stephen J Howland (Thomas Jefferson School of Law)
ENTITY MEETINGS: Chicago competitions commiteee meeting:
I was an active member on the negotiation subcommittee.
ISSUES: We are thinking of creating a fourth competitive round to act as a semi-finals and give more students the opportunity to compete. As it is, the competitions go very quickly, and end with the vast majority (all but four teams) leaving after the first day and only two competitive rounds. We feel that allowing the top ten or so teams from the first day should have another comeptitive round to get a better basis for judgement of finalists and also provide for more experience in negotiations.
PROJECTS: I have been drafting an Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism for the resolution of on-campus disputes. I feel this would be a valuable way for students who compete with the ABA to gain real-world experience and work with real clients while also providing for the effective resolution for on-campus disputes.
National
Student Director for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Programs
Cristal Robinson (Thomas M. Cooley School of Law)
PROJECTS: IRS meeting for update of their program for 2007.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: Submitted a new letter that is now posted on the Law Student Division VITA webpage. The spring will be more active.
