Executive Lt. Governor

Overview

The Law Student Division operates on a fiscal calendar year beginning September 1 and ending August 31 of each year. Circuit Governors are elected during the Spring Circuit Meeting in February and officially take office at the conclusion of the March Law Student Division Board of Governors Meeting. The first duty of the Circuit Governor upon taking office is to solicit and appoint Lt. Governors to assist in the operations of the Circuit. Lt. Governor terms generally run from May through March of each year. Assignments vary somewhat from year to year depending upon the needs and circumstances facing the circuit and/or Division at a given time.

Role

The Executive Lt. Governor is the second ranking officer of the Circuit. Should the Circuit Governor not be able to fulfill his duties, the Executive Lt. Governor assumes primary responsibility.

Responsibilities

The Executive Lt. Governor serves as a liaison between the Circuit Governor and other Lt. Governors and provides project coordination support to the Governor including, coaching assistance and oversees the progress and completion of Lt. Governor projects and assignments. In some Circuits, the Executive Lt. Governor is responsible for maintaining archive copies of meeting minutes. In other cases, this position is responsible for the planning and logistics of the Circuit's Spring and Fall Meeting. Individuals interested in this position should consult their individual circuit job description for specific responsibilities.

Project Timeline

As the second ranking Circuit officer, the Executive Lt. Governor's responsibilities will cover a wide range of project coordination in cooperation with the Circuit Governor. Over this person's term, he/she will be responsible for overseeing the activities of other Lt. Governors and reporting their progress the the Circuit Governor. Generically, the Executive Lt. Governor should be prepared to:

  • Make sure Lt. Governors are sticking to deadlines set and are keeping up with their assigned duties and the Circuit agenda.
  • Collecting reports from Lt. Governors for review and submission to the Governor making any recommendations for changes or adjustments to timelines or project deadline dates.
  • Following up with Lt. Governors responsible for SBA Presidents and ABA Reps to ensure that all school leaders have been contacted, data collected and contact has been established.
  • Attend meeting of the Circuit and the Law Student Division as recommended by the Circuit Governor (primarily the Fall, Spring and Annual Meetings).
  • Establish a method of reporting for ABA events sponsored by law schools in the circuit such as Work-A-Day, Diversity Day, Mental Health Day, etc.
