Lt. Governors General Information
Overview
Lt. Governor positions are offered by each of the Law Student Division's 15 Division circuits. Lt. Governors assist the Circuit Governors with various facets of circuit administration. Most Circuit Governors appoint an Executive Lt. Governor that serves as the governor’s “right hand” and is primarily responsible for meeting planning. Circuit Governors also appoint additional Lt. Governors that are responsible for specific areas of circuit programming including: diversity, membership, mental health, SBAs, public interest, VITA, and others. Lt. Governors are appointed by the Circuit Governor and serve a one-year term concurrent with that of the Circuit Governor who's one-year term runs from March to March. Lt. Governors are also encouraged to attend all circuit meetings and the Annual Meeting as well as workshops specifically geared toward their responsibilities, and other Division and Circuit functions.
How to Become a Leader
Through the ABA Law Student Division, members have the opportunity to gain leadership experience while still in law school. The Law Student Division offers something for every student at every level of their legal education. There are opportunities at the local, regional and national level.
Lt. Governor Responsibilities
Specific roles and responsibilities may vary from circuit to circuit depending upon the unique needs of the members within that circuit. It is at the Circuit Governor’s discretion to determine the Lt. Governor positions offered within his/her circuit and to determine their official duties.
- Circuit Governors may also assign additional duties to Lt. Governors at any time during their term as necessary based on the circumstances facing the circuit or Division at that time.
- Periodically, activity reports are requested by the Circuit Governor and Lt. Governors should establish a method of maintaining archive records of activities within the circuit for future reference.
- All Lt. Governors should be prepared to write an article for the Circuit newsletter and at least one article for the Student Lawyer magazine.
Lt. Governor Project Time Lines
The Law Student Division operates on a fiscal calendar year beginning September 1 and ending August 31 of each year. Circuit Governors are elected during the Spring Circuit Meeting in February and officially take office at the conclusion of the March Law Student Division Board of Governors Meeting. The first duty of the Circuit Governor upon taking office is to solicit and appoint Lt. Governors to assist in the operations of the Circuit. Lt. Governor terms generally run from May through March of each year. Assignments vary somewhat from year to year depending upon the needs and circumstances facing the circuit and/or Division at a given time.
