Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Efforts
Dear SBA Presidents:
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, U.S. charities struggled
to bring food, shelter and comfort to the victims of the hurricane
in what aid groups called the biggest relief operation for
a natural disaster in American history. Relief agencies like
the Red Cross and Salvation Army said the impact of the disaster
was unprecedented and probably worse than the devastation
caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 -- until now the costliest
US storm on record. Many in the law school community have
been directly or indirectly affected by the events of this
week affecting the Gulf Coast. The ABA Law Student Division recognizes the magnitude of
this disaster and encourages SBAs around the country to assist
with the efforts to help the victims of this disaster. Dozens
of organizations and charities are providing assistance to
those affected by this disaster. Several SBA Presidents have
contacted the ABA Law Student Division to discuss and share
their ideas for fundraisers in their law schools. The ideas
ran the gamut from the truly simple to very creative. Ideas for fundraisers will be posted on the ABA Law Student
Division Website (http://www.abanet.org/lsd)
and the SBA Listserv. Just think, if every student attending
an ABA-approved law school donated $1, we would raise nearly
$140,000 for disaster relief. There are various charities that will be directly helping
the victims of Hurricane Katrina. If your SBA is looking for
a charity to donate to, here
are some ideas. Please let us know what you are doing to help and the results
of your efforts. This is an opportunity for our nation's law
students to assist those in need. Please encourage your fellow
law students to do whatever they can to help. Sincerely, Eric Koester A list has been compiled of the various messages from law
school SBAs regarding the hurricane disaster and the law school
community fundraising efforts and ideas. Fundraising
