Job Description
Law Student Division Representative to the ABA Board of Governors
The ABA Board of Governors develops methods and specific plans for making the American Bar Association and its activities useful to the members in their professional work. Between meetings of the ABA House of Delegates, the ABA Board of Governors may perform, not inconsistently with any action taken by the House, the functions that the House itself might perform.
The ABA Board of Governors is composed of members of the Association elected by the House, one from each district, six section members-at-large, one judicial member-at-large, two young lawyer members-at-large, two women members-at-large and two minority members-at-large. In addition the Board has the following ex officio members: the President, the Chair of the House, the President-elect, the Immediate Past President, the Secretary and the Treasurer, and every third year as provide in 8.2 ( c ) the Secretary-Elect and the Treasurer-Elect. (7.2). Since August 2005, the Law Student Division has had a non-voting Division Representative on the ABA Board of Governors.
The role of the Division Representative to the ABA Board of Governors is to advocate the Law Student Division positions to the ABA Board of Governors, and to work for adoption of Division and other initiatives filed with the Board which directly affect law students. The Division Representative will interact closely with the high ranking officials in the ABA. The Division Representative should be sensitive to the image they present at all times. Punctuality, dress appearance, appropriate conversation and mature behavior are paramount for conducting business on behalf of the Law Student Division.
Many of the duties of the Division Representative are of a diplomatic nature since they represent and promote the positions and policies of the Law Student Division to the Association Board of Governors. The person in this position must appropriately and skillfully convey the views of the Division to the ABA Board of Governors, and in turn, report back to the Division leadership on issues that affect the Division, law students and legal education.
The Law Student Division Representative to the ABA Board of Governors will also serve as a voting member of the Law Student Division Board of Governors. The successful candidate for this position is responsible for attending each meeting of the ABA Board of Governors, as well as each meeting of the Law Student Division Board of Governors. The ABA Board of Governors meets in November, February (Midyear Meeting), June, and August (Annual Meeting). The Law Student Division Board of Governors meets in October, March, and August (Annual Meeting).
The Law Student Division Representative to the ABA Board of Governors responsibilities include:
- As directed by the Division leadership, advocate Law Student Division positions to the ABA Board of Governors.
- Work for ABA Board of Governors adoption of Division initiatives, co-sponsored initiatives and initiatives directly affecting law students filed with the Board of Governors.
- Inform the Division Board of Governors of actions pending before the Board, as well as any action taken by the Board, at the conclusion of each of the ABA Board of Governors meetings.
- Communicate regularly with Division Board of Governors in order to assess the voice of law students on issues of concern to law students across the county.
- Work with the Division Chair and other officers to execute the legislative agenda.
- Prepare and submit comprehensive reports on Association, Division, and ABA Board of Governors activity and action. (8 reports annually).
- Travel and attend ABA Board of Governors meetings (4 times) and the Law Student Division Board of Governors meetings (3 times).
