Job Description

Circuit Governors
(15 circuits Nationwide)

The Law Student Division Board of Governors is comprised of 23 voting members: (4) national officers, (3) division delegates to the ABA House of Delegates, (1) division representative to the ABA Board of Governors, (15) circuit governors. Non-voting members of the Board include (3) officers-elect, student editor of Student Lawyer magazine, (3) liaisons and (6) affiliated bar organization representatives.

The Board shares the government of the Division with the Assembly. The Board focuses on administration and organization. The Assembly focuses on substantive policymaking. The Board addresses a variety of matters including:

  • bylaw, policy and procedure matters, organization and administration of the Association, Division or circuit;
  • an office, officer or entity within the Association, Division or circuit; representation/presence of the Division at the school level;
  • relations with student bar associations;
  • locals matters that affect a particular circuit(s) or school(s) to which the Board can contribute a national perspective or a matter that the Board has recently considered or undertaken research.

The Division Board of Governors is also responsible for project approval, planning for the Annual Meeting, approval of policies and procedures, revisions and resolutions.

Circuit Governor responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of ABA Law Student Division regional activities at every ABA-approved law school within the circuit.
  • Represent the interests and communicate the needs of law students attending the ABA-approved law schools in circuit.
  • Communicate to circuit members information about the national concerns, interests and activities of the Division's Board of Governors, Division programs, activities, leadership positions, and encourage participation in the same.
  • Develop a plan of action for circuit to include public interest initiatives, programming, membership outreach, etc.
  • Select a cabinet of lieutenant governors to implement circuit plan of action. Positions may include lieutenant governors of: communications, diversity, membership, programs, public interest, resolutions, SBA Presidents, VITA.
  • Communicate regularly with ABA Representatives, SBA Presidents, and Liaisons at each law school in the circuit.
  • Plan and develop programming, training, and social activities for the fall and spring circuit meeting.
  • Manage circuit list serve (electronic discussion groups) and facilitate communications among circuit members.
  • Develop copy for circuit web page located on Division's website.

Promote the Division programs, activities, and competitions to circuit members

  • Conduct interviews of circuit member candidates for Division liaison positions.
  • Conduct circuit meeting at the ABA Annual Meeting.
  • Serve on the Division's Board of Governors. Attend meetings, write/submit reports and serve on 1-2 board committees.
  • Travel on behalf of the Division (6 times annually). Most travel-related expenses are reimbursed by the Division subject to Division guidelines.
  • Time commitment: 30 hours monthly.
