ABA Law Student Division

2008 Career Fair

Student Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Career Fair?
The Career Fair is organized as an informational interview/table talk session. Legal employers will have tables where attendees can drop off resumes and meet representatives from the law firm or agency.

Why should I attend the Career Fair?
The Career Fair provides you with a unique opportunity to meet with legal recruiters to discuss your assets and their needs.  This is a great opportunity to interact with legal employers without the typical stress of formal, sit-down interviews.

Will interviews be held during the Career Fair?
Formal interviews will not take place at the Career Fair.  Rather, this is a first opportunity to get your face and resume in front of the employer.  Strong initial first impressions will likely lead to call-backs for formal interviews.

Who can participate in the Career Fair?
Any Law Student Division (continuing or recent graduate) who has registered for the ABA Annual Meeting can participate.  Only law students wearing official ABA Annual Meeting badges will be admitted to the Career Fair.

How do I register for the Career Fair?
Admittance to the Career Fair is included in your ABA Annual Meeting Registration fee. In order to visit the Career Fair, you must be registered for the Annual Meeting.

What fees are involved with attending the Career Fair?
Access to the Career Fair is included in your $75 registration fee to attend the ABA Annual Meeting. You must be wearing your official ABA 2008 Annual Meeting badge to gain access to the Career Fair. Pre-registration for the Annual Meeting closes on July 8.

Are funds available to help me with my travel expenses?
Unfortunately, the ABA Law Student Division is unable to provide financial assistance to help law students attending the Annual Meeting. Students are encouraged to seek financial assistance from their law school.

What is the attire for the Career Fair?
Students should dress as if they are actually interviewing for a position. Business formal attire (courtroom attire) is appropriate.

Should I bring anything with me to the to the Career Fair?
Students should bring several copies of their resume.  Students should also consider bringing writing samples and copies of their transcript. There is a Business Center inside the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel for those students who wish to make additional copies of their resume. The cost for any services requested of the Business Center should be settled when the service is rendered and are at the student's own expense.

What employers are participating in the Career Fair?
Law firms of all sizes, state and federal government agencies, military JAG, as well as public interest and non-profit groups are participating in the ABA Law Student Division Career Fair.  As employers register, they will be added to the list of employer participants posted on the Career Fair website.

Please note that you should not contact employers directly to schedule interviews or submit resumes.  They have been made aware that this is a table talk and resume submission event.

Can I get help with my resume?
A panel of lawyers and legal recruiters will be on hand during the Career Fair to critique your resume and offer suggestions to maximize impact and improve its effectiveness to ensure a great first impression.

What else can I do other than attend the Career Fair?
Because your registration fee to participate in the Career Fair is tied to the ABA Annual Meeting, you will be admitted to all Law Student Division activities as well as most CLE programming sponsored by ABA entities throughout the Annual Meeting. Most ABA events begin on Thursday, August 7 and conclude on Tuesday, August 12. Law student-specific programming is posted on the Law Student Division’s website and will continue to be updated over the summer. Other ABA events can be found on the ABA's Annual Meeting website

Are there discounts on hotel or airfare for the meeting?
Through the ABA Annual Meeting website, you can take advantage of the discounted ABA hotel rates when you register. Please visit the ABA’s Annual Meeting website to learn about airfare and car rental discounts. Pre-registration for the Annual Meeting closes on July 8. After that date, you will be required to wait until you arrive at the Annual Meeting to register on-site. Visit the ABA Annual Meeting webpage for details on how to register and make your travel arrangements.
