A Message From Your 2nd Circuit Governor
Hi there and welcome!
My name is Michelle Sassouni, and I am honored and excited to introduce myself as your new 2nd Circuit Governor. I am currently a 2L at Touro Law where I served as the ABA Representative for the 2007-08 academic year. I realize how difficult it is to balance anything with law school, but I encourage you to take advantage of all the opportunities the ABA Law Student Division has to offer.
Please consider joining me in a leadership position by applying for a Lt. Governor role within the Law Student Division. You can view all the positions available online. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to become involved with the ABA on a more intimate level as well as contribute to our circuit. Applications will be accepted until May 2, 2008.
Beginning later in April, nominations will be accepted for the three (3) Law Student Division Delegates to the ABA House of Delegates and for the Vice Chair-Student Bar Associations. If you are interested in national leadership, working with lawyers and other law professionals from throughout the country, I encourage you to apply. The job descriptions and nomination forms are available online. Applications are due June 1, 2008.
The Mental Health Initiative is a new project shedding light on the stress and anxiety that we as law students and future professionals will face. The ABA has elected a National Mental Health Day each year, where law schools across the nation will acknowledge and provide support for mental issues, emphasizing the importance of living a balanced life in law school. I hope that we can work together throughout the coming year to promote and encourage a healthy and safe environment within our law school communities.
We are hosting the ABA Annual Meeting this coming August 7-12 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square, New York City. The Law Student Division has scheduled a variety of events and programs including the Career Fair which provides an opportunity for law students to meet with hiring representatives from law firms, government legal departments, and public interest organizations. Law Student Division members who register also have access to over 200 CLE programs the ABA Divisions, Sections, Committees and Commissions have to offer. Register online today.
I look forward to seeing you all this summer and speaking with you throughout the course of the year. I am here to serve you and maximize your ABA membership and overall law school experience. Please feel free to ask me any questions, pose suggestions, or share comments and concerns.
Best,
Michelle

Grant Fund Program
Need money for a last minute event at your school? You don’t need to be an ABA Representative to apply for the ABA Grant Program. This program is open to any student organization at an approved ABA-approved law school.
Basic criteria and deadlines include:
- First-time event or program- this funding is provided to help begin a new event or program and is not available for annual or recurring events or programs
- Detail, detail, detail- please provide as much detail as possible on the application form
- Deadline! - The application form must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to the event in order for the fund to be granted. (This is to ensure the committee has enough time to process your application, if you have less than 3 weeks, your application may still be submitted but the chance of it being approved before your event is less likely!)
