Tip 29. Become an expert in whatever you do.
Consumers of legal services demand that you know what you do.
Tip 30. Credential yourself in the areas that will most help you get business and are appropriate for your practice.
Start these efforts early as they take literally years to pay off. For example, a tax attorney needs to be expert in what she does, write articles, work on an ABA Tax Section Committee, etc. that show who you are and introduce you to others in the profession outside your firm.
Tip 31. Become involved in "extra-curricular" activities that help your practice.
E.G., The person involved in non-profit counseling should get involved in high profile non-profits in her community.
Tip 32. Choose outside activities that you like.
People rarely are effective in marketing when they do not enjoy what they are doing.
Tip 33. Observe and consider different practice styles of senior attorneys that you think are effective.
Adopt those that feel comfortable to you.
Tip 34. Maintain contacts with people you meet in your practice.
They will progress to higher and higher ranks in their organizations (or those to which they move) as you do. Also, when they move to a new organization, it is a great opportunity to get a new client.
Tip 35. Leave time for a personal life; stand up for you.
While career demands from time to time will mean that you cant do things you would like, if you do that all of the time, you will not be as effective at the office.
Tip 36. Keep in regular contact with your existing clients, especially when you havent heard from them in a while.
Periodic lunches or other contact just to find out what is going on can be helpful in getting more business. Frequently they do not know you can help them with something.
Tip 37. Be attuned to the needs of your clients outside your area.
Introduce your associates to your contact when you perceive an area where they can help. Lots of times they many not know your firm can help in an area.
Tip 38. Help clients with personal matters when you can (finding a nanny, hard to get tickets for their personal use, finding a new job).
It will pay off later.
