eLawyering and the Future of Legal Work

Thursday, May 3, 2007
2:00 – 3:00 pm

Description:

eLawyering is doing legal work – not just marketing it – over the Web. Pioneering practitioners have found dramatic new ways to communicate and collaborate with clients and other lawyers, produce documents, settle disputes, interact with courts, and manage legal knowledge. There are exciting initiatives underway now that deserve attention by all lawyers – present and future.

The legal profession is being disrupted from without and from within. To be successful in the coming era, lawyers will need to know how to practice over the Web, manage client relationships in cyberspace, and offer “unbundled” services. Come hear about the knowledge and skills you need to prosper in the years ahead.

This free program is open to all Williamsburg-area law students and lawyers with an interest in the innovative use of technology. Refreshments will be served.

Panel:

Brian Donnelly (Director of Educational Technology and Lecturer in Law, Columbia University School of Law)

Richard Granat (CEO and Founder, MyLawyer.com, Inc., Epoq, US, www.directlaw.com, Rapidocs.com)

Blair Janis (Practice Applications Manager, Ballard, Spahr, Andrews, & Ingersoll, LLP)

Marc Lauritsen (President and Founder, Capstone Practice Systems, Harvard MA)

Plenary Session

Lawyers as Leaders

Friday, May 4, 2007
11:30 – 2:00 pm
Allegheny Room (Main Level)

On Friday, May 4, from 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., the ABA Law Practice Management Section, at its Spring Meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia, is pleased to present a lunch plenary session on the topic of leadership among lawyers..

While lawyers are primarily leaders, they are generally not well-trained in basic leadership theory and effectiveness. Two distinguished speakers who are experts on the topic of lawyer leadership will present their thoughts and knowledge on the subject during this plenary session.

Thomas A. Edmonds, Executive Director of the Virginia State Bar, and immediate past President of the National Association of Bar Executives will share with us his vast experiences in leading an organization of volunteer lawyers and law related professionals.

Mr. Herb Rubenstein, JD, MBA, DSS, is the author of “A Practical Guide to Leadership for Lawyers” Second Edition, to be published by ABA Publishing later this year. He will discuss the practical application of leadership principles to the practice of law and law firm management. Mr. Rubenstein will also discuss what leaders of the organized bar in the areas of law practice management, might consider when promoting individual leadership training for lawyers.
