One Plus One Equals Three: Men and Women as Collaborators
Friday, Feb. 9, 2007 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
JW Marriott – London II room
Most law firms have done a good job of creating gender diversity as measured by “the numbers.” This is especially true at entry levels where, in AmLaw 100 firms, approximately equal numbers of men and women occupy first year classes. However, these firms have not succeeded in creating significant numbers of women rainmakers. Perhaps more importantly, these firms have not succeeded in creating significant collaborations between men and women – especially in the area of business development.
We must move beyond the stereotypes of “Mars and Venus” if we are going to fully leverage the talents of firms’ attorneys. Collaboration that is potent enough to lead to significant monetary and cultural impact is more complex than the activity of two individuals working together. Effective partnerships utilize a grounded body of knowledge to direct their interactions. Specifically, men and women optimize their potential as powerful collaborators when they utilize scientific data about their chemical and biological differences to guide their work together. Attorneys who have the knowledge and skill set necessary to recognize, acknowledge, embrace and engage the continuum of male/female variations may successfully leverage approaches that will lead to high caliber business outcomes and increased levels of job satisfaction.
In this presentation participants will learn about:
- How men and women can support each other to achieve success
- How to create strong co-gendered teams for competitive business development
- Opportunities and challenges for men and women working together
- Communication skills that optimizes co-gendered team work
- Skill sets for effective collaboration
- Ways to engage gender differences
- Research which highlights gender differences and strengths
- The application of science to the practice of law
