Law Practice Benchmark

Leading Indicators in the Business of Practicing Law

Business development effort. In its latest survey of Law Practice Today readers, The BTI Consulting Group found that 80-plus percent of respondents spend just 10 hours a week or less on business development. But separate BTI research with the Legal Sales and Service Organization has found that the number of hours devoted to business development is one of four key determinants of success—and each hour dedicated to it weekly yields up to $23,400 in additional revenue. "Finding time to devote to business development is an extraordinary challenge," says Marcie L. Borgal Shunk, a principal at BTI. "However, the most successful rainmakers are devising creative ways to integrate development into their everyday activities—and the rewards are impressive."
