Marketing

by Tom Mighell

May 2006

For the past three years, we have seen a definite evolution of marketing resources for attorneys on the Internet.  In Dennis Kennedy's 10 Great Legal Marketing Resources, the sites he reviewed included marketing information from professional services companies; a year later, in Marketing Blogs I discussed new weblogs that cover the general topic of marketing -- not just legal marketing.   Since that time, I'm pleased to report that a large number of marketing and client service weblogs aimed directly at the lawyers have made their way online.  It's really amazing that we have experts in legal marketing providing relevant, useful information on literally a daily basis.  Here's a look at some of the newest marketing/client service blogs, with only one repeat from last year.

Amazing Firms, Amazing Practices -- Gerry Riskin is a Canadian lawyer and Co-Founder of Edge International, a marketing consulting firm.  He's discussing law firm marketing as well as other topics related to successful law firm management.

Associate Marketing Mentor -- When lawyers talk about marketing, we often forget that a very large segment of our population -- associates -- needs to learn the ropes of marketing, in order to ensure successful practices continue.  That's why Larry Bodine's new blog is so helpful -- it's helping associates become rainmakers, partners, and entrepreneurs.

Creating Dominance -- from another Edge International consultant, Ed Wesemann, this blog discusses business development, firm governance, practice management, and profitability, among other things.  Ed specializes in assisting law firms with strategic issues involving market dominance, so you're sure to find some good marketing ideas here.

David Maister -- the one blog in this group from a non-lawyer, but probably one of the most valuable.  David Maister is widely acknowledged as one of the leading authorities on the management of professional services firms, and now he's giving away a lot of great advice, for free, at his weblog.  He's also recorded a series of fourteen podcasts on the topic of "Lessons I've Learned" -- they are a must-listen for anyone interested in increasing their marketing awareness.

Golden Practices -- the blog of Michelle Golden, the President/CEO of Golden Marketing, an organizational consulting and marketing company exclusively serving professional service firms.  She's using her blog to provide ideas, tips, and practical advice for CPAs, lawyers, financial and investment advisors, and more.

In Search of Perfect Client Service -- Patrick Lamb is a partner with the Chicago firm of Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd.  In addition to his work as a litigator, Patrick is also offering consulting services in marketing, client service, and firm leadership and management.  Since marketing is a huge part of providing great service to your clients, this blog will definitely provide you with current, timely tips on marketing your practice.

Larry Bodine's Professional Services Marketing Blog -- no stranger to Strongest Links articles on marketing, Larry's blog has been around since 2003, dispensing must-have advice on marketing your legal practice.  He's also found the time to publish the Associate Marketing Mentor blog, above.

Leadership for Lawyers -- this is the site of Mark Beese, the marketing guy at Holland & Hart in Denver.  The blog is mainly focused on helping lawyers to become better leaders, but you'll also find some practice management and marketing tips thrown in as well.

Legal Marketing -- Tom Kane served for over 17 years as an in-house marketer for several law firms, and has been involved in all aspects of legal marketing, from training, planning, and public relations to conducting image campaigns, market research, advertising, and client feedback programs.  His blog is dedicated to legal marketing for the small firm, and individual lawyers in any size firm.

Marketing Catalyst -- the blog of Bruce Allen, he's sharing what he finds and what he thinks he knows about marketing and sales of legal and accounting services.  Recent posts include Inside the Mind of an Entrepreneur, Finding the Intuitive Law Firm Marketer, and Selecting the Right Marketing Team.

Rainmaker Best Practices -- this blog is part of a larger site published by Dan McEvoy, a former accountant-turned-professional marketing service firm marketing system consultant.  He's discussing both direct and general marketing, along with posts on management and sales ideas.

What About Clients? -- Dan Hull, a San Diego lawyer and publisher of this blog, is asking some good questions about providing true service to our clients.  In addition to marketing, which is a big part of providing better service to our clients, Dan's also discussing the billable hour, quality of life, and other law practice management issues.
