ABA TECHSHOW Bloggers

by Tom Mighell

March 2006

As always, this year’s ABA TECHSHOW conference features some of the finest speakers on legal technology. And like last year, many of those speakers are also bloggers. So I decided to continue the tradition started last year of listing the ABA TECHSHOW bloggers, in this month’s edition of The Strongest Links. You’ll no doubt recognize many of them as mainstays of the legal blogging world, but there are some new blogs in this year’s crop that are bound to catch your attention as well.

ABA TECHSHOW Blog -- We need to start with this blog, which is just hitting its stride in providing great content. The goal here is to feature posts by ABA TECHSHOW speakers on current legal technology issues, year-round. Most of the authors you’ll find here do not have blogs, so this is a great Internet outlet for their collective wisdom.

Barchives is the blog of Toby Brown, director of Communications for the Utah State Bar. Toby and co-blogger Lincoln Mead examine various aspects of owning and operating a bar association, with topics of interest to state, local, and specialty bars. At ABA TECHSHOW, Toby will be speaking on Networking – Can I Still Do It Myself?, How Can You Be There When You Can’t Be There? Remote Lawyering and VoIP.

beSpacific -- Sabrina Pacifici’s blog provides “accurate, focused law and technology news,” with an emphasis on government documents and issues. Sabrina is also the founder and editor of LLRX.com, easily one of the best legal research sites on the ‘Net. Sabrina will be speaking on Competitive Intelligence Research on the Internet and Beyond Google & Yahoo: Advanced Search.

Between Lawyers is a group blog featuring commentary on the issues raised when technology, culture, and the law intersect. Contributors include Denise Howell, Ernie Svenson, Marty Schwimmer, and TECHSHOW speakers Dennis Kennedy and Tom Mighell.

Dennis Kennedy Blog -- Speaking of Dennis Kennedy, his weblog is a great showcase for his legal technology expertise. There you’ll find Dennis discussing electronic discovery, knowledge management, Bruce Springsteen, and NASCAR, often at the same time. At TECHSHOW, Dennis will be speaking on The Weakest Link: Security in a Wired and Wireless World and Podcasting for Lawyers.

IHeartTech is a new offering from legal technologist and trainer extraordinaire Adriana Linares, she’s providing technology tips and advice for a lawyer’s life and business. Her posts strike just the right balance – having fun while you’re learning about legal technology. Adriana will be speaking on Managing Microsoft: Word Challenges (And Solutions for Them) and Advanced Word Processing Skills for Support Staff (and Lawyers too!).

Inter Alia -- At the risk of self-promotion, I offer my humble blog for your consideration. I have been discussing Internet legal research tips and news since 2002, as well as resources on legal technology and computer care in general. At ABA TECHSHOW I’ll be speaking on Blawg: Marketing Your Practice with a Weblog, Beyond Google and Yahoo: Advanced Search, and Podcasting for Lawyers.

Jim Calloway's Law Practice Tips Blog -- Jim's blog was voted “Favorite Practice Management Weblog of 2005” by TechnoLawyer, and if you visit you’ll be able to see why. Each week he offers up great law practice management tips on technology, marketing, finance, and more.  Jim’s TECHSHOW sessions include Blawg: Marketing Your Practice With a Weblog, 60 Marketing Tips in 60 Minutes and the favorite 60 Sites in 60 Minutes.

KnowledgeLine -- Tom Baldwin is the Chief Knowledge Officer at Sheppard Mullin, and while he’s a new name to ABA TECHSHOW, he’s not new to the world of weblogs. His firm boasts six weblogs, and Tom’s own blog discusses Knowledge Management issues. At ABA TECHSHOW Tom will speak on Online Collaboration and Meeting Tools.

Law Practice Management is another new blog since last year, author Ellen Freedman helps lawyers (not just in Pennsylvania) in managing the business side of their practice. Her posts are filled with loads of helpful information on marketing, technology, and other law practice management issues. Ellen will speak on 60 Finance Tips in 60 Minutes and Critical Technology Skills for a Law Office.

LawSites -- Bob Ambrogi continues to track new and intriguing web sites for the legal profession at his blog. He’s also the author of the Media Law Blog. Bob brings his vast knowledge of the Internet to Free vs. Fee: Fact Finding on the Internet and 60 Sites in 60 Minutes.

Reid My Blog! is the eponymous weblog of Reid Trautz, the Director of the Practice Management Advisory Service for the District of Columbia Bar. Reid’s blog is dedicated to “furthering innovation in management, governance, and ethics for lawyers.” Reid’s ABA TECHSHOW sessions include 60 Technology Tips in 60 Minutes and Strange Bedfellows: Ethics and Technology.

The [non]billable hour -- Last but not least is the blog of Matt Homann, who’s discussing new ways of thinking about the delivery of professional services. The goal of his blog is “changing professional practice one idea at a time.” At ABA TECHSHOW, Matt will present on 60 Marketing Tips in 60 Minutes and Beyond ROI: Achieving Excellence.
