May 2007

Our Current Question

Law firms and lawyers are under increasing pressure to bring in new clients. Have you witnessed infighting over client origination? How has this affected the work climate at your firm?

Last Month's Responses

What’s the best advice you can give to an associate today?

“Stay in touch with your friends—from law school, from college, from high school, from anywhere. It’s more important than working late evenings on a brief. You can get an extension on a brief, but if you lose touch with your friends, you’ll lose them. You can never tell where business may come from, and keeping your friends will enrich your life greatly.”

“Don’t get locked into golden handcuffs until you are sure you don’t want a family or other interests outside the firm. After two to three years, if you love the billable life, then by all means, live it up! Enjoy that fat salary. But if you’re thinking ‘Is this all there is to life?’ then stay away from the massive mortgage and find a position that lets you have a life. There are actually lots of them out here!”
