JIOP Launches New Philadelphia Site

The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program has added Philadelphia as a new program location for summer 2010 placements. The program will continue to place 200 applicants but applicants will now be able to select judges in Philadelphia as an additional location option. Existing applicants interested in adding Philadelphia to their location preferences may update their application materials (instructions on how to update your materials was included in your confirmation email). In addition, we will continue to accept applications for new students wishing to apply until Friday, February 5.

JIOP Application Update

Due to the high volume of applications being submitted some students are experiencing technical difficulties when trying to submit their application. Please continue to submit your application until you receive a confirmation email. It may take several tries. Be sure all of your attachments appear at the bottom of the screen prior to submitting. Once you receive a confirmation email, you can assume that your application has been received. You will be contacted if we need additional information from you.

Judicial Intern Opportunity Program

The Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority and/or financially disadvantaged law students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in participating cities. Participating judges are from Illinois; Texas; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; Philadelphia, PA; and Washington DC. Students may indicate geographic location preferences on their applications. Interns will receive an award of $1,500.

The mission of the Judicial Intern Opportunity Program is to provide opportunities to students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the profession. The program also provides opportunities to students with disabilities, students who are financially disadvantaged and students who identify themselves as gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered. To assist you in identifying how you qualify for this program please click here.

The program is only open to students who have not previously participated as an intern in the program. Students applying to the program must submit a completed application, grades (second-year students), resume, legal writing sample and a statement of interest. Students may rank location preferences on their application; however students may not request particular judges or courts.

Screening interviews will be conducted to better determine student qualifications. Only qualified students will be sent on for judicial interviews. Judicial interviews will continue until all positions are filled.
