In 1908, the ABA adopted its the first set of comprehensive rules to regulate the profession. It was a monumental achievement in professional self-regulation—one that we have honored with continued reflection and revision over the last century. While the rules today reflect complexities our predecessors could not have imagined 100 years ago, the world in which we litigate is too dynamic to rest on our laurels. Even as we celebrate the last 100 years, the ever-changing demands of our profession justify renewed scrutiny of professional obligations as we enter a second century of professional regulation.

Our four-session Symposium, featuring some of the nation’s most respected judges, practitioners and academics, including Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito, will examine the environment of 21st-century litigation and address the role that professional standards should play, or perhaps should not play, in helping us navigate our current and future challenges.
