Subcommittee Descriptions

Business Development

Co-Chair positions are open

The Business Development subcommittee supports the career success of Committee Members by, among other things:

  • providing research on corporate law department diversity expectations of outside counsel, including, for example, diversity criteria related to Requests for Proposals and evaluation of retained counsel;
  • promoting speaking opportunities for Committee Members at CLEs and conferences, and writing opportunities with legal publications; and
  • facilitating business referrals among Committee Members through use of the Committee’s discussion group.

Membership

One Co-Chair position is open

The Membership subcommittee coordinates the Committee’s communications with Members, to inform them of benefits and programs and to seek their feedback, plans networking events for Committee Members, and coordinates Committee recruitment efforts. Importantly, as the attendees at recent Committee meetings at Section of Litigation events have been predominantly African-American, this subcommittee is tasked with outreach to increase representation of other racial groups within the Committee.

Newsletter

The Newsletter subcommittee publishes the Minority Trial Lawyer newsletter, and also publishes articles on the Committee website. The Newsletter subcommittee is also considering publishing a compilation of scholarly work examining the impact of race on the law, and vice versa, authored by minority law professors, and a compilation of articles on civil procedure, evidence and trial practice authored by minority law professors.

Pipeline

Co-Chair positions are open

The Pipeline subcommittee coordinates the Committee’s efforts to better prepare minority students – from high school through law school – for careers in the legal profession. This subcommittee promotes existing “pipeline” diversity programs by working with these programs to identify opportunities for Committee Members to instruct and mentor student program participants. This subcommittee also encourages Committee Members to share information about “pipeline” diversity programs with the young lawyers-to-be in their family and communities to increase student awareness and utilization of these programs.

Programming

Co-Chair positions are open

The Programming subcommittee develops programs for ABA CLEs, conferences, and teleconferences of interest to Committee Members, and featuring Committee Members as faculty.
