ABA Section of Litigation
Family Law Litigation

Message from the Chairs

Welcome to the website of the Family Law Litigation Committee of the Section of Litigation. Another exciting year has begun under the leadership of new Section Chair Judith Miller. One highlight of the year will be the Section Annual Conference that is scheduled for April 2008 in Washington, D.C. Check here periodically as we will share information regarding programs and events as soon as it becomes available.

The Family Law Litigation Committee is busy working on its next edition of the newsletter, website development and a teleconference for early next year. We will be addressing ethical dilemmas and other advocacy issues facing family law practitioners, such as dealing with pro se litigants and third party experts. We will be examining whether a civil Gideon right to counsel should exist in certain family law matters. As always, we remain concerned about the legal issues affecting individuals in same-sex relationships.

We are looking for newsletter articles addressing restrictions on a parent’s relocation as implicating one’s right to travel, and on post-majority support of children pursuing higher education. If you are interested in writing an article for our newsletter on one of these topics or some other topic of interest to you, please contact us. If you are skillful in website development, we have a role on our website subcommittee just waiting for you!

The Committee has monthly conference calls to discuss issues and our work, and we welcome you to participate.  Please join our committee.  We look forward to talking to you and perhaps meeting you at a future Section of Litigation event.
