International Liaison Office
Frequently-Asked Questions from U.S. Lawyers
1. I have a client who has a legal problem in
Australia. How do I find a lawyer in Sydney?
While the ABA does not provide either domestic referrals or international referrals, we can provide names and addresses of national or local bars as well as the names of several reference guides. To receive contact information for the legal organization in a specific country, please send us an e-mail at ABAILO@abanet.org or tel. 312-988-5107; fax 312-988-6178.
2. I'd like to work as a lawyer overseas for a few months. Are there any firms or organizations which do short-term lawyer placements?
The ABA Section of International Law & Practice's International Legal Exchange Program (ILEX) works to provide short-term placements for both U.S. lawyers interested in working overseas as well as non U.S. lawyers interested in internships in the United States. Only individuals admitted to practice in their respective jurisdictions are eligible to apply. For further details, please contact International Legal Exchange Committee (ILEX).
The ABA has four international councils: Central and East European Law Initiative (CEELI), ABA-Africa (Africa Law Initiative Council), ABA-Asia (Asia Law Initiative Council), LALIC (Latin-American and Caribbean Law Initiative) that seek legal professionals to serve as volunteers on-site on a pro bono basis. Resident liaisons and specialists provide legal assistance and technical advice to governments and other legal entities. The Councils can provide additional information on its volunteer opportunities.
The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), an affiliate of the Institute of International Education, offers scholarships or fellowships to post-doctoral academics and professionals. To obtain information regarding current available positions or awards, please visit the CIES website.
