Regulatory Scheme: Rhode Island Rule of Professional Conduct 7.4 provides that a lawyer may not state or imply that he or she is a specialist, except in the areas of patent and admiralty law. Lawyers are permitted to state that their practices are "limited to or concentrated in particular fields of law" as long as the communication contains a disclaimer indicating that "the Rhode Island Supreme Court licenses all lawyers in the general practice of law. The court does not license or certify a lawyer as an expert or specialist in any field of practice" [Rule 7.4]. Proposed Rules would recognize ABA accreditation of certifying organizations, but would still require the disclaimer.
