Regulatory Scheme: New Mexico Rule of Professional Conduct 16-704 permits lawyers to state that they are specialists in particular fields of law. However, an attorney who is certified by an entity other than the New Mexico Board of Legal Specialization must include "a prominent disclaimer that such certification does not constitute recognition by the New Mexico Board of Legal Specialization" unless the lawyer is also recognized by the board as a specialist in that area of the law or the board does not recognize specialization in that area. [Rule 16-704(C)].
