Regulatory Scheme: Ethics Rule 7.4 permits lawyers to use the terms 'certified,' 'specialist,' 'expert' or similar terms to describe their qualifications and to identify "certificates, awards or recognitions...." However, where such terms are used to reference one's status as a board certified lawyer, the statement must be truthful and verifiable and must also include the following disclaimer: "The Supreme Court of Illinois does not recognize certification of specialties in the practice of law and the certificate, award or recognition is not a requirement to practice law in Illinois" [Rule 7.4(c)].
