Regulatory Scheme: Pursuant to Rule 7.4 of the Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct, Hawaii lawyers are permitted to communicate information regarding specialty certification provided the communication is not false or misleading, clearly states the name of the certifying organization, and includes a statement indicating that "The Supreme Court of Hawaii grants . certification only to lawyers in good standing who have successfully completed a specialty program accredited by the American Bar Association" [Rule 7.4(c)]. Supreme Court Rule 1.13 calls for lawyers who are awarded certification by an ABA accredited program to petition the court for a 'Hawaii Certificate of Specialization' in the specialty area, which must be renewed every five years.
