Open Meeting on Proposed ABA Model Act on Civil Right to Counsel

On Saturday, February 6, 2010, the ABA Civil Right to Counsel Working Group (including representatives from the ABA’s Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants (SCLAID), Section of Litigation, Section of Business Law, Judicial Division, Commission on Domestic Violence, Commission on Immigration, Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities, Coalition for Justice, and Section of Tort Trial and Insurance Practice) will hold an “Open Meeting on Proposed ABA Model Act on Civil Right to Counsel.” The Working Group will discuss the latest draft of the proposed model act, which will be submitted to the House of Delegates for consideration during the ABA Annual Meeting in August 2010, and welcomes attendance at the meeting as well as comments from the public. In addition, the Working Group is considering a second draft resolution to be submitted in August, the proposed “ABA Basic Principles on a Right to Counsel in Civil Legal Matters.” The latest drafts of both proposed resolutions appear below. Please submit any comments regarding either of these draft resolutions in writing to Shubi Deoras, SCLAID consultant, at no later than March 15, 2010. As there is limited space in the meeting room, please also let Ms. Deoras know if you plan on attending the Open Meeting on February 6th, as well as the number of parties in your group.

Also, please note that this meeting is the first of several opportunities to provide comment and feedback regarding the two draft resolutions for submission to the ABA House of Delegates in August 2010. We gladly welcome any written comments you may have regarding these drafts by March 15, 2010 as indicated above. In addition, we are considering the feasibility of convening another Open Meeting (either in-person or via conference call) prior to the submission of the draft resolutions to the ABA House of Delegates and will post a notice once a decision has been made.
