The Access to Justice Program (ATJ) was created in August 1997. A recruitment program is in its initial phase as is a resource directory containing descriptions of each program in Louisiana which delivers legal services to the poor. The ATJ, in conjunction with the Delivery Systems Subcommittee of the Louisiana Bar Access to Justice Committee, is developing TEL-LAW programs describing the concepts of pro bono and legal services. The automated telephone service will direct callers to the appropriate local pro bono or legal service organization. Quarterly statewide meetings of the pro bono directors will be coordinated. In conjunction with the Access to Justice Committee's Resource Development Subcommittee, the program will investigate alternative funding mechanisms and strategies such as dues checkoffs, fund drives, filing fees, etc. The Access to Justice Director will act as media coordinator and has begun development of a statewide media plan. A newsletter, web site, clearinghouse and statewide conference are all in the planning stage.
