Pro bono services in Indiana range from the informal to structured local bar association programs. County bar associations assist with recruitment, fund-raising and recognition efforts. There are four pro bono programs in Indiana that receive funding from the LSC: Legal Services Program of North Indiana, Legal Services of Maumee Valley, Legal Services of Northwest Indiana, and Legal Services Organization of Indiana. Other pro bono organizations include: (1) Community Organizations Legal Assistance Project, Inc., and (2) law school programs at Valparaiso, Notre Dame, Indiana University Bloomington, and Indiana University - Indianapolis. In addition, a new statewide pro bono program will be instituted pursuant to recently adopted Rule 6.5 Voluntary Attorney Pro Bono Plan (effective 2/l/98). The rule provides for a 21 member Indiana Pro Bono Commission, to operate within the Indiana Bar Foundation, which will be responsible for management of the voluntary attorney pro bono plan. The Foundation's authority will include making funding decisions and disbursing available funds to pro bono organizations/projects upon recommendation of the Commission. The Commission will supervise the district pro bono committees which will be created in each of the 14 judicial districts and will be responsible for creating an annual pro bono plan.
