Pro Bono Graduation Requirement Program
Description of Programs
The objective of the pro bono program is to learn about a lawyer's role in providing access to justice by assisting to provide legal services to the poor, disadvantaged, and other individuals or groups unable to secure legal assistance to address critical problems.At the FIU College of Law, Pro Bono Legal Service is defined as "uncompensated legal work or education in conjunction with an individual lawyer, law firm, or organization on behalf of indigent individuals, a disadvantaged minority, the victims of racial, gender, or sexual orientation, or other forms of discrimination, those denied human or civil rights, or work on behalf of individuals, groups or causes that may otherwise lack access to the legal system." All College of Law students must complete at least 30 hours of qualifying pro bono legal service. This requirement must be completed no later than the end of the semester or summer session immediately preceding the student's final semester of law school.
Location of Programs
The program is located administratively within the Office of the Academic Dean who monitors the academic progress of students in completing the graduation requirements.

Awards/Recognition
It is done through a cocktail event where a student, selected by the Community Service Committee, is awarded "Community Service Award" for his/her outstanding service to the community.
Community Service
On-going community service projects include student involvement at multiple agencies in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, including Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., Catholic Charities Legal Services, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, Legal Aid of Broward County, Church World Service, Put Something Back, The Self-Help Project of the 11th Circuit Court, the Public Defender's Office of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Human Services Coalition, and Lawyers for Literacy.

Students are placed at the Public Defender's Office and State Attorney's Office within the Miami Dade and Broward. At the request of students we have been successful in placing students in Gainesville and other areas. We have also had placements at the Capital Collateral Regional Office, Security and Exchange Commission and U.S. Attorney's Office. http://law.fiu.edu
