Description: The Legal Studies Program offers a course of study
designed to prepare the individual to work in the legal profession.
A student in this program will be taught the skills needed to
obtain an entry-level position as a legal assistant or to continue a
legal education. The skills a student will learn include legal
research, interviewing, investigation, legal drafting, preparation
of evidence and witnesses for trial, and assisting in the trial
of a lawsuit. This program prepares individuals for career opportunities
in law firms of all sizes, corporate legal departments, legal
aid offices, public defender or prosecuting attorney offices and
municipal legal departments. The certificate requires at least
30 hours of college credit prior to enrolling with at least 18
hours of gen ed classes, including college English. The certificate
requires 33 hours of legal studies course, nine of which are restricted
electives. A bachelor's degree is not required, though many students
already have one. We also offer a minor to students on campus
who have declared a different major.
