In recognition of this problem, the Special Committee on Problems of Substance Abuse in the Law Schools was established by the AALS Executive Committee in the spring of 1990.

Annotated Bibliography (.pdf - 174K) - Planning Guide for Designing and Implementing Lawyer Recovery Monitoring Programs
The Model Recovery Monitoring Program was developed by representatives from committees within the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility and lawyer assistance programs across the United States and Canada and was finalized in the Fall of 1998. This Model provides basic guidelines for use by disciplinary and licensing agencies when they consider placing a lawyer on some form of probation. These guidelines are designed to facilitate effective monitoring of sobriety in the real world.
