Section of Legal Education Information for Law Students Affected by Hurricane Katrina Tulane University School
of Law Loyola University-New Orleans Deans of ABA-Approved Law Schools Brian Bromberger and I just completed a conference call with John Sebert, Ginger Patterson, John Garvey, and Bill Hines. John will be following up with a more detailed post and specific instructions, but here's the gist of what we've decided for the moment. The national organizations will ask the deans to provide in a more or less uniform fashion the terms on which they are willing to accomodate Tulane and Loyola students. The AALS will put these all up on a Web site and the two schools will put that link on their emergency Web sites. You will then be asked to report back to the AALS with information regarding the students who you do enroll. Obviously, there are a myriad of questions regarding the basis on which these students are being taken into your institutions. I don't have anywhere close to all the answers right now. However, Brian and I are agreed that our preference for now is that you take them as visiting or transient students for one semester. However, as I said in my post earlier this morning, because we recognize that every school operates under a different set of internal policies, if you make a different arrangement with one or more students, we will support that decision so that the student is assured he or she is not prejudiced in any way in terms of receiving credit, etc. We will also work with you on the financial situation as the requirements of your institutions deictate. Brian and I deeply appreciate this assistance from the national organizations in trying to impose some rationality and consistency on the situation, as we are not in a position to do so ourselves.
