Law School Outreach Program
Take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about career paths in Labor and Employment Law from seasoned attorneys by attending one of the local sessions of the Law School Outreach Program. Members of the American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law will visit ABA accredited law schools across the country to discuss the various career opportunities and special dimensions of this legal specialty.

The Labor Lawyer Student Writing Contest

ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law 2010 Student Writing Competition

Any student enrolled at a law school accredited by the American Bar Association may enter the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law’s annual writing competition. Authors may write on any topic in labor or employment law. Editors will evaluate submissions for novelty, usefulness, and success in meeting the goals described in the journal’s editorial statement:

The ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law is a journal of ideas and developments in all areas of labor and employment law designed to provide balanced analysis for practitioners, judges, administrators, and the interested public. The journal provides an opportunity for members of the labor and employment bar to share insights and perspectives on practical issues of current interest while encouraging discussion of their broader policy implications.

The winning article will be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law and earn its author a $500 prize.

To be evaluated, articles must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document attached to an e-mail sent to: abajlel@umn.edu.

The document must be no more than 40 pages in length, double-spaced, with type in 12-point Times New Roman font. Footnotes also should be in 12-point Times New Roman and double-spaced.

The body of the e-mail message should include the author’s name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, law school, and expected graduation year. Articles may not be accepted for publication elsewhere to be eligible to win.

Entries must be e-mailed by the submission deadline: 11:59 p.m. Central Daylight Saving Time, June 15, 2010.

Employment Arbitrator Listing
The Section's Committee on ADR in Labor and Employment Law has created an Employment Law Arbitrator List, which allows Section members to designate themselves as employment arbitrators. This listing is accessible only by ABA members who are seeking such arbitrators, and arbitrators seeking to be included on the list must be Section members. This list is for employment arbitration only and not for the purpose of selecting arbitrators of labor disputes arising under collective bargaining agreements. This service is of value both to those who wish to serve as arbitrators and those seeking neutrals throughout the country.

Pro Bono Opportunities for the Labor and Employment Lawyer
The need for pro bono services in the labor and employment area is acute. To acknowledge individuals, firms, corporate and union legal departments, governmnent agencies, and other organizations that help meet this crucial need, the Section's Pro Bono Committee sponsors the Frances Perkins Public Service Award, and has assembled a state-by-state listing of pro bono organizations for labor and employment lawyers.

The Section's Pro Bono Committee has created a Labor and Employment Law Web Resource Directory for your reference, listing links to free labor and employment law related Internet resources that can be used in providing labor/employment related pro bono services. In addition to this directory, be sure to visit the ABA Center for Pro Bono's directory to view a comprehensive, updated, searchable collection of pro bono programs.

Mentors Needed for Task Force on Student Trial Advocacy Competition
The student trial advocacy competition task force is seeking mentors to coach and instruct on legal issues and guide preparations and presentations for law school students who elect to participate in the trial advocacy program. If you are willing to volunteer your time and assist in this worthwhile endeavor, please notify Mike Posner (mposner@posner-rosen.com, 213.389.6050) or Stewart Manela (manelas@arentfox.com, 202.857.6364).

YLD Fellowship Program
The Section is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for its Young Lawyers Division Fellowship Program. This program is designed to give young lawyers who are members of the Section the opportunity to become familiar with and actively involved in the Section.

Section Seeks Book Contributors
One of the most beneficial products that the Section offers is the comprehensive treatises published jointly with BNA Books. These treatises, written by and for Section members, are not only beneficial to those who read and reference the books, but also to those who contribute their valuable knowledge to produce the books.

Multi-jurisdictional Practice Task Force and Survey
In conjunction with the Council's efforts to provide information and guidance to Section members on the issue of Multi-jurisdictional Practice, a Task Force has been created to study and make recommendations to the Council on the issue as it relates to labor and employment lawyers.

ABA Women and Minority Speaker Clearinghouse
The ABA Center for Continuing Legal Education maintains a clearinghouse of women and minority instructors of continuing legal education programs. This clearinghouse contains detailed information on talented and knowledgeable minority and women lawyers who can serve as CLE speakers at upcoming ABA programs. Interested parties can join via the internet.

Committee Membership
We invite all Section Members to participate in the committees. Committees produce programs, publications, reports and you can get involved as much or as little as you wish. All committees have open enrollment, prerequisite Section membership.

The Equal Opportunity in the Legal Profession Committee
The Equal Opportunity in the Legal Profession Committee is looking for new members. The committee deals with affording all qualified individuals equal access and opportunity to practice law, especially labor and employment law, regardless of race, creed, color, religion, gender, age, disability, or any other arbitrary distinction. All interested Section members should contact the Section office . Please include your name, ABA #, and affiliation (management, union, plaintiff, public or other).

Leadership Development Initiative
The Section is in the process of developing a number of new initiatives to broaden its leadership base. The initiatives will serve as a structure for recruiting, cultivating and preparing a larger and more diverse cadre of candidates, including minorities and women, who are enthusiastic about and prepared to assume leadership roles within the Section.
