Comments from the Chair Patricia Costello Slovak
FREE MONEY! Do I have your attention now? We have established a Section Development Fund to provide funding for eligible Section members to attend the Annual CLE conference and the midwinter meetings of their committees. The purpose of the Section Development Fund is to increase participation in Section activities for members whose employers do not provide the necessary financial support. |
Besides giving money away, the Section has been busy providing superb CLE this past month. Our International Labor Law Committee met in Rome from May 13-17, 2007 and had its largest attendance ever. We had guest celebrities: the U.S. ambassador to Italy, the president of the ABA, the publisher of the International Herald Tribune, a member of the Senate of the Italian Republic and we had brilliant committee members and panelists from 17 different countries.
Also in May, in Washington, D.C., our Outreach to Government Lawyers Committee honored government lawyers and recognized the recipients of our 2006 Federal Labor and Employment Attorney of the Year Award. >> Read More
ANNUAL CLE CONFERENCE PREVIEW
Track of the Month: The Consulting Track: Don’t Worry— My Lawyer Will Know the Answer
The Consulting Track program will feature creative presentations covering a wide range of the cutting-edge issues on which clients most frequently seek advice from their labor and employment lawyers. This track will address practical questions relating to employment discrimination, retaliation and whistleblower claims, military leaves of absence, wage/hour claims, violence in the workplace and protection of business information. The track will also examine worker rights and developments under HIPAA, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Uniform Job Reference Statute, and technology in the workplace involving blogging, personal web pages and email, as well as drug, genetic and psychological testing. Featured Committee Newsletter Article
Advancing the understanding and development of the law of equal employment opportunity is the central goal of the Labor and Employment Law Section’s Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity Law (EEO Committee). From March 21 through March 24, 2007, the EEO Committee held its National Conference on Equal Employment Opportunity Law in Charleston, S.C. The program opened with the annual EEO Update, and over the next four days members shared their knowledge and viewpoints on a wide variety of topics. Programs covered accommodations for religious beliefs, diversity in the legal profession, best practices to avoid retaliation claims, what EEO lawyers should know about bankruptcy, privacy in the workplace, and compensation discrimination. Other sessions focused on trial practice issues such as e-discovery, selecting the modern jury, and litigating non-economic compensatory damages.
