2008 Judicial Clerkship Program
The Judicial Division and the ABA Presidential Council on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession are working together to produce the eighth annual Judicial Clerkship Program (JCP), scheduled for February 7-9, 2008 at the ABA Midyear Meeting in Los Angeles, CA. The JCP gives judges a chance to counsel and inspire impressive law students from various schools throughout the country in a series of panels, small group discussions, and social events.
2008 Justice Center John Marshall Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 American Bar Association Justice Center John Marshall Award. The John Marshall Award was established to honor those dedicated to the improvement of the administration of justice. The eighth annual Award will be presented at the 2008 ABA Annual Meeting in New York, NY. Lawyers Conference Promotes Professional & Ethical Conduct
The Judicial Division Lawyers Conference held a program titled, Ethical Responsibilities between Judges and Lawyers in Litigation, on October 5, 2007 in conjunction with the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Fall Meeting in Charlotte, NC. This program focused on sections of the ABA Model Rules for Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Judicial Conduct relating to courtroom proceedings. The interactive program panel included Judicial Division Chair, Judge James A. Wynn, Jr. and Lawyers Conference Chair, Gloria Wilson Shelton. The program was very well-received and served to strengthen the connection between the Lawyers Conference and the Young Lawyers Division membership.
Least Understood Branch Co-Sponsors Rule of Law Program
The Least Understood Branch Project co-sponsored a program with the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section on October 4, 2007 at the Breakers in Palm Beach titled, Defending the Rule of Law in America: Countering Attacks on Judicial Institutions. Part I consisted of a panel addressing the attacks on the judiciary and related topics while part II focused on civic education practices used to train lawyers on how to rebut attacks on the judiciary and serve as the voice that defends our courts. The moderator was Standing Committee on Judicial Independence Chair, Doreen Dodson. Panelists included ABA Past President Dennis Archer, President of the National Bar Association Vanita Banks, Immediate Past President of the American Association for Justice Mike Eidson, and Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice R. Fred Lewis.
North Carolina Rule of Law Leadership Conference
The state of North Carolina hosted a Rule of Law Conference at the North Carolina Bar Center on July 26, 2007. Judicial Division Chair Judge James A. Wynn, Jr. and Judicial Division Program Chair Justice Mark Martin assembled a distinguished panel which included Alston & Bird Professor of Law and Professor of Political Science at Duke University, Erwin Chemerinsky and ABA Past President, A.P. Carlton.
