Regional Courthouse Updates
» The National Center for State Courts is offering updates on courthouse information for Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
» The Federal Courts website for the Fifth Circuit (including Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana) includes links to each courthouse in the affected region, which individually offer status updates and instructions for judges, attorneys, and litigants.
» It has been confirmed that all federal judges affected by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath have been accounted for and secured. The judges are dispersed in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Houston. Plans are in place to proceed with all regional criminal cases in Houma, LA, about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans.

» The American Bar Association has compiled an extensive online resource to provide judges and attorneys with the opportunity to offer assistance to those affected by the hurricane.
Legislation
» Federal Judiciary Emergency Special Sessions Act of 2005 (H.R. 3650): Legislation has passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 409-0 allowing federal courts to relocate when the chief judge in that court declares emergency conditions leave no venue within its jurisdiction "reasonably available."
» Article: Federal courts in Louisiana relocate under new law
» The Texas Supreme Court has ordered an extension of an emergency provision to assist clients in Hurricane Katrina and Rita-ravaged regions, protecting attorneys who are now located in Texas from prosecution of unauthorized law practice if they are practicing as though they were in their home states. Under the Court's revised order attorneys from Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama can practice law from Texas locations until May 31, 2006, but must register with the Texas State Bar. A copy of the order, along with the registration form for eligible attorneys, is available online.

» The Arizona Supreme Court issued an order on September 12, 2005, allowing affected lawyers to practice in Arizona courts for six months.
