Reaching a Verdict: What Do We Want for the American Jury System?
The right to be judged by a jury of our peers has been a bulwark of the American justice system for more than two centuries. Whatever its flaws, most Americans take it for granted that citizens juries are the best way to achieve justice in a democracy. But in an increasingly complex environment, does the jury system still serve us as it was meant to do? It's time to take another look.
This issue book is intended to help promote deliberative dialogue about the jury system. It is not, by any means, the only way to talk about the issue, but it provides enough structure to focus on the issue and begin talking about it productively. The goal is to reach some shared understanding of what the problems may be and to see if there is any shared sense of direction about the best ways to resolve them.
