Attacking Bias in the Justice System:
A Compendium of Program Alternatives

VI. COMPLAINT MECHANISMS

Develop an ombudsman program to specifically handle the complaints of both employees and users of the court who have experienced racial or ethnic bias in the judicial system..

ACTION STEPS

VI(a)

Each court should develop an ombudsman program with a formalized grievance procedure such as the Superior Court of New Jersey- Essex Vicinage program.

VI(b)

Each jurisdiction should have a permanent, wide ranging commission composed of lawyers, court personnel and citizens, to look into these issues.

VI(c) A survey of existing commissions should take place to develop recommendations for operation and to quantify the current landscape as far as grievance is concerned.
