For several years the ABA Coalition for Justice (now
merged with the Committee on State Justice Initiatives)
has surveyed state and local bar associations and state
supreme courts to update our information clearinghouse.
In 2001 and 2003, the Coalition included selected metropolitan
trial courts in the survey. The survey shows more than
1,000 areas of justice improvement activity, reported
by over 80 courts and bar associations.

A good way to approach the survey information is to
start with the Executive
Summary and then review the Activities
Response Tally to see a list of the bar associations
and courts participating in the survey and a tally of
their responses for each category of justice improvement
activity. Next, be sure to visit the state Narrative
Reports that provide descriptions of the courts'
and bar association's justice improvement activities.
You can search for a word, name, or phrase (such as
"jury," "Montana," or "mental
health court,") within the state reports by clicking
on the binoculars icon in the menu bar at the top of
the pages of the PDF document.
The 2003 survey report is not available as a print
document. It is an abbreviated update of the Summary
of State and Local Justice Improvement Activities2001,
a 184-page document that includes greater detail about
activities in each of the justice improvement areas.
