This survey on justice improvement activities is part of the ABA’s Justice Initiatives Program, overseen by the Coalition for Justice in cooperation with the ABA Justice Center. Other OJI activities to involve the public in justice improvement include:

  • Holding conferences to provide an opportunity for court and bar leaders and members of the community to discuss key justice issues. The annual Forum on Justice Improvement is generally held in October. See http://www.abanet.org/justice/2001forum.html .
  • Producing the Roadmaps series of brief, plain language "how to get there" guides to help communities, bar associations, and courts understand key issues and find resources for making improvements. Topics include "User-Friendly Courts," "Judicial Selection," and "Racial and Ethnic Bias." See http://www.abanet.org/justice/roadmaps.html .
  • Working with the National Center for State Courts to follow up the May, 1999 national conference on improving public trust and confidence in the justice system sponsored by the ABA, the Conference of Chief Justices, the Conference of State Court Administrators, and the League of Women Voters. See http://www.ncsc.dni.us/PTC.HTM .
  • Assisting individual state and local justice initiatives
  • Promoting community involvement in justice improvement activities through local, state, and regional bar or court events
  • Reaching out to national non-lawyer organizations to encourage involvement of their members in state and local justice initiatives.
  • Cooperating with the Kettering Foundation and the National Issues Forum to engender discussions of the justice system in communities in every part of the country.
