Beginning in May 2004, the ABA Standing Committee on Judicial Independence
commissioned a research project intended to result in a single comprehensive
database on judicial diversity in state appellate, trial, and limited
jurisdiction courts. Realizing that no such knowledge base had previously
existed on a state level, the committee enlisted the aid of Professor
Barbara L. Graham of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Professor
Graham and her research team were charged with gathering detailed
information on state judicial diversity, particularly as it relates
to race/ethnicity, gender, methods of selection variables, and state
population variables.
This website represents a compilation of the research team's findings
on both a national and individual state levels.
