The Spring 2009 Judges' Journal is entitled "The Economy: Strengthening the Foundation." An interview with Judge Richard Posner marks the conservative end of the spectrum of opinions in this issue on the current financial crises. At the other end lies "Economic Regulation and the Rule of Law: Minimum Standards for the Legal Framework of a Free and Democratic Society" by Harvard Law Professor Joseph William Singer. He argues that, just as freedom in society cannot be maintained without laws, freedom in the market requires regulation as well. Judges Ronald Wilson and James Peck offer contrasting views of the crisis from very different parts of the country—South Tucson, Arizona, and the Southern District of Manhattan. Other articles in this issue address judicial disqualification and recusal, problem-solving court teams, political and ideological attacks on judges, judicial outreach, and 50 years of important work by the NCSTJ.
