National Conference of the Administrative Law Judiciary

Strategic Plan

Five years ago the National Conference of the Administrative Law Judiciary passed a Strategic Plan to guide its future endeavors. Late in 2003, a new committee was formed by then chair, Judge Tyrone S. Butler, to review and revise the Plan, with Judge R. Bryan McDaniel as chair and eight former and future leaders of the Conference as members of the committee. After initially meeting in person at the 2004 ABA Midyear meeting in San Antonio and subsequently by phone conferences, the committee made headway in its sizeable task of brainstorming and refining ideas for carrying forward the Conference’s mission “to promote quality, efficiency and fundamental fairness in the administrative justice system to enhance the reputation and professionalism of the administrative judiciary.”

Then, when his term began in Atlanta at the 2004 Annual ABA Meeting, the next conference chair, Judge Dan F. Soloman, appointed four additional members to the committee and Judge Judith S. Boggs as co-chair. The committee continued to meet on numerous phone conferences to revise and enhance the Plan on many fronts, adding new goals, objectives, and tasks. It also collected from its “veteran” members a list of NCALJ’s many significant accomplishments to append to the Plan.

Finally, in February, 2005, at the Midyear Meeting in Salt Lake City, the committee met for the last time and finalized its recommendation for a new revised and enhanced Strategic Plan. It was presented to the NCALJ Executive Committee, which passed it unanimously.

The new Strategic Plan will be publicly posted for all to read on the NCALJ web site: http://www.abanet.org/jd/ncalj/pdf/strategic_plan.pdf. The concept is to continue to upgrade this Strategic Plan at least every five years to ensure an organized vision in coordinating the Conference’s future endeavors.

The NCALJ Executive Committee commended the Strategic Planning Committee for its time and effort in developing a solid plan for use by Conference leaders and members in coordinating their efforts toward accomplishing the NCALJ mission. The Committee was comprised of:
