Fall 2004
Executive Committee Profile: Marcia McCormack
by Anne Nuttelman, New Hampshire Supreme Court

Marcia McCormack, currently the deputy clerk of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, started working for the court in 1990, after having earned her J.D. from the Franklin Pierce Law Center and her L.L.M. in Tax from Boston University. A former co-clerk dubbed her the winner of the "Triple Crown of Geekdom," because, before earning her L.L.M. in Tax, Marcia obtained a degree in Math and an MBA from the University of Rochester.

Marcia's first job at the court was as a law clerk for the venerable Justice William Batchelder, known around these parts as "Batch." After serving as law clerk for seven years - first for "Batch" and, later for former Chief Justice David Brock and Associate Justices Sherman Horton and John Broderick -- Marcia was promoted to staff attorney. She soon became senior staff attorney and, this past January, assumed the deputy clerk position.

Marcia obviously must have been a child bride for, despite her youthful appearance, she has been married for 33 years to her husband, Tim. CASA regulars no doubt have met Tim who has accompanied Marcia to every CASA conference since her first in 1997. Tim, a radiologist in Concord, New Hampshire, enjoys CASA almost as much as Marcia does. He is a big fan of the t-shirt swap and particularly enjoys working on his golf game while Marcia attends the seminar.

Marcia and Tim have two sons: Ryan and Mike. Ryan, 27, is an assistant branch manager for the Bank of America in Boston. Mike, who will be 30 in January, following his mother's example, is a first-year associate at a Portland, Maine law firm. He is engaged to be married in August 2005. Marcia could not be more excited!

In her time away from work, Marcia loves to cook. She also loves to run and hopes one day to have some grandchildren to chase! One of the most important things to know about Marcia is that she is a big, bordering on the fanatical, fan of the world-champion Patriots and the World Series champion "Bo-Sox."

Not that she's counting the days or anything, but Marcia looks forward to retiring from her position at the court in 2009 (58 months from now, to be precise). Upon retirement, she and her husband intend to move to Florida for half the year, where they now own a beautiful condo. She hopes to find a teaching position there and to spend the remainder of her year traveling.

Come to think of it, that sort of life doesn't sound half bad!
