Appellate Judges Conference
Welcome to the webpage of the ABA Judicial Division’s Appellate Judges Conference (AJC). The AJC is the largest national conference of appellate judges, appellate lawyers and appellate staff attorneys.
Our conference includes judges on federal circuit courts, the military court of appeals, state courts of last resort, and state intermediate appellate courts. We also welcome appellate lawyers and appellate staff attorneys who can join the Council of Appellate Lawyers (CAL) or the Council of Appellate Staff Attorneys (CASA).
We are particularly proud of the educational opportunities that AJC provides through its educational arm, the Appellate Judges Educational Institute. Our annual Summits feature high quality programming, with nationally recognized speakers and programming to meet the needs and interests of judges, lawyers and staff attorneys. Hundreds of judges and lawyers attend, making it the premier educational opportunity for appellate judges and lawyers in the nation. This year’s program will be held in Orlando, Florida, November 19-22, 2009. More information can be found at this link or by downloading the brochure.
Through the AJC we work on and have input into many issues of importance to judges and appellate lawyers, such as the revision of the Model Code of Conduct. We have opportunities for professional development, education, and informal exchanges. Reaching out and conversing with fellow judges, lawyers, and staff attorneys across the country provides contact with many talented colleagues through the country. Those who participate develop friendships which have lasted well beyond the AJC work.
If you wish to become involved in the improvement of the appellate judiciary nationwide, we have committees and task forces that you can join. Another great way to become involved is through participation in the ABA Minority Judicial Clerkship Program to encourage law students to seek judicial clerkships after graduation.
Those of us who have been members of AJC and have participated in its functions know how much it has meant to us both professionally and personally. We want you to join us and become part of our extended appellate family. For information on how to join our conference, please click here.

The Cutting Edge of Federal-State Preemption:
The Advocate’s Strategy and the Supreme
Court’s Decisions in the 2008-2009 Term
Preemption is increasingly
a hot topic for lawyers,
judges, and legal academics.
Indeed, during the last Term,
the United States Supreme
Court issued several pathmarking
preemption decisions.
Those decisions – as well as the change of presidential administrations – may
well signal a shift in the balance of regulatory power between the federal
government and the States.

Judicial Clerkship Program - Celebrates 10 Years!
The Judicial Clerkship Program is a joint effort of the ABA Judicial Division and the ABA Presidential Advisory Council on Diversity in the Profession with the generous support of LexisNexis®. The Program is held for three days in various sessions and brings together up to 90 minority law students from around the country together with judges and former law clerks. The group participates in panel discussions, a research and writing exercise, and informal social events. These activities are designed to introduce and reinforce to the students the reasons and values of pursuing a judicial clerkship. Numerous students have obtained clerkships and internships as a result of their participation. The 2009 Program hosted approximately 100 minority law students from up to 19 law schools and nearly 50 judges from 22 states. The 2010 Program is expecting a record number as well. Register today!
