- ABA HOD to Consider four Section-sponsored Recommendations
at ABA 2004 Midyear Meeting

At the ABA 2004 Midyear Meeting, the ABA House of Delegates will consider
four proposed resolutions developed by the Section on universal jurisdiction,
HIV/AIDS and human rights, civil marriage, and Native American health
care.
Two Section-sponsored programs are among the Section's events at the
Midyear Meeting.
On Friday, Feb. 6, a program entitled, "From Military Commissions
to USA Patriot: The International Impact of US Counter-Terrorism Initiatives
across the Globe" will be held in Conference Rooms 3/4 on the third
floor of the Marriott Rivercenter. Panelists will examine how the USA
PATRIOT Act has led to copycat laws passed around the world and their
impact.
On Saturday, Feb. 7, the Death Penalty Moratorium Implementation Project
will sponsor a program entitled, "A Moratorium on Executions: The
Professional Responsibility to Make the Case" in Conference Rooms
3/4 on the third floor of the Marriott Rivercenter. Speakers will discuss
the unique responsibility of lawyers to become involved in the moratorium
movement. ABA President Dennis J. Archer will make opening remarks. The
Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities will co-sponsor the
program.

- Program: "A Moratorium on Executions: The Legal Profession's
Responsibility to Make the Case", Marriott Rivercenter, Conference

With the Judicial Division, the Section will co-sponsor a Mock Social
Security Hearing on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 1:00 p. m. - 2:30 p. m. at
the Bexar County Courthouse, 5th Floor Courtroom. The Courthouse is a
ten-minute walk from the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel, host hotel for the
Section.
With the Commission on Immigration Policy, Practice, and Pro Bono the
Section will co-sponsor a CLE program on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 9:00 a.
m. - 12:00 p. m. entitled, "Immigrant Children: Pro Bono or Pro Se?"
The program will be held in room Salon C on the 2nd Floor of the Marriott
Riverwalk, directly across the street from the Marriott Rivercenter.
- Congratulations to Privacy and Information Security Committee Vice
Chair Jeffrey M. Rosen on the release of his new book, "The Naked
Crowd: Reclaiming Security and Freedom in an Anxious Age." The
book discusses how Americans can and must preserve freedom, privacy,
and security in a post-9/11 world.
- Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee Vice Chair Mary L.
Bonauto was named "Lawyer of the Year" by Lawyers Weekly,
which selected 10 Massachusetts lawyers who stood out from the crowd
in 2003, for her work in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, which
resulted in the Supreme Judicial Court decision that found prohibitions
on same-sex marriages unconstitutional in Massachusetts. She is the
only attorney in the history of Lawyers Weekly to be named "Lawyer
of the Year" twice.
- Rights of Women Committee Co-chair Julia L. Ernst has started a new
position as Legislative Counsel for Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY),
spearheading Slaughter's work as co-chair of the Congressional Caucus
on Women's Issues and the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus.
