International Law Publications - International Law News

A key purpose of the Section newsletter, the International Law News (ILN), is to keep Section members informed about current international law developments and important Section news. The ILN publishes articles on breaking issues for practitioners in the international arena to assist them in gaining helpful insights into the hot issues and obtaining concrete, how-to advice on practicing international law in the marketplace. The ILN also publishes regular columns on public and private law initiatives, survival guides to cities, and pros and cons columns on breaking issues of general interest. The ILN is intended to give practitioners helpful insights and guide lines to doing business in the international arena. Articles should be short (2,000 words maximum) and comprehensible to nonspecialists.

Members of the Section of International Law receive the International Law News free as a benefit of membership.

The full text of the current and immediate past edition of the International Law News is available in the Members-Only area of this website.

Cornell and the Cour de Cassation

As part of the Section’s on-going international outreach activities in promoting the study and practice of comparative international law, Salli Anne Swartz, the Section’s Finance Officer, attended the inauguration of the Cornell Center for Documentation on American Law in the Library of the Cour de Cassation in Paris France on July 17 2007.

In attendance were four Justices of the Supreme Court, Justices Ginsburg, Kennedy, Breyer and Chief Justice Roberts as well, The Allan R. Tessler Dean and Professor of Law, Stewart Schwab, Claire M. Germain, the Edward Cornell Law Librarian and Professor of Law, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and President of the Network of Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union, Monsieur Vincent Lamanda, First President and Chief Justice of the Cour de Cassation, the Ambassador of the United States to France and many other dignitaries.

During the ceremonies which included the unveiling of the bronze plaque in the Library, Professor Germain received the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur for her efforts in bridging the American and French legal cultures and Dean Schwab received the Chevalier de L’ordre National du Mérite medal for his efforts in bringing to fruition the gift of the American law collection to France’s Supreme Court.

This donation of over 13 000 volumes of American case law and law journals will provide those studying law in Paris unprecedented access to American law. Chief Justice Lamanda characterized the collection and the first and most important center of American Law in France and Lord Phillips in his speech, noted the enthusiasm for studying and applying foreign and comparative law in Europe which “has not always manifested itself in the decisions of the United States Supreme Court”. Hopefully the attendance of four of our Supreme Court Justices will enhance discussions in this direction.

Our Section was proud to be invited to this noteworthy and key event which underlines the Section’s goals and objectives in promoting international law worldwide as the “Gateway to International Practice”
